Got a call from what seemed to be Microsoft authentication. When I picked up, it was just them giving a login verification code. Bit suspicious if you ask me.

I didn’t pick up because I was talking to someone else, but the number looked a bit off. It showed up as 1 855-330-8653, which made me a bit suspicious.

I picked up the phone, and next thing I know they smashed through my door, killed my three kids and took my wife. Seriously, do NOT pick up!!!

This call comes from Microsoft Authentication, it's basically a second layer of security for logging into protected servers, particularly when you're working remotely. If you pick the option to have them call your mobile when signing into the server, you'll hear a message saying it's Microsoft and asking you to press # to confirm the login. Hitting # stops the call and lets you in. If you weren't trying to log in though, you definitely shouldn't press # at all.

This afternoon I had to check what that number was because I’d asked for a call from Microsoft Authenticator this morning to help me access my work account but couldn’t remember!

I agree, it’s definitely Microsoft calling, they get in touch when you kick off that multi-factor authentication stuff.

Had a call from Microsoft Authentication asking me to verify using the "Call Me" method - one of those options along with Authenticator App and Text a Code. Thing is, I never tried logging into anything secured at the time, so it made me think my account details might have been leaked or someone is trying to break in. Could also be some sort of automatic login from an email app or similar. Either way, watch out and double-check your accounts if you get these unexpected calls!

I actually use this for work as a way to verify my login when I'm working from home, pretty reliable stuff.

Got a call from some automated voice claiming it was Microsoft Authenticator. Thing is, I’m already logged into my work account through the app. Feels like someone might be trying to access my number or account by mistake, I guess.

My workplace uses Microsoft Authenticator to sign in to Office from afar, so it’s not some dodgy thing or anything. Definitely not a scam.

Hmm, if it really was a proper call from Microsoft, they’d probs leave a message that actually makes sense to you, right? If they don’t leave anything clear, it’s pretty obvious it’s a scam. You’d think most folks would have sussed that out by now.

This was a call from Microsoft for authentication purposes, something my job uses to confirm that you’re authorised to log into their systems.

This was actually a real Microsoft two-step verification prompt I got while trying to access my work email, which has sensitive stuff on it.

Just a heads up, Microsoft uses this thing called multi factor authentication (MFA) which is an automated system to help log into their apps. Sometimes you might get one of these messages by mistake if someone else has accidentally entered your phone number instead of theirs.

If you get a call about Microsoft’s multi-factor authentication and you weren’t expecting it, it’s likely just a mistake. It usually involves a password and a phone call, but if it’s out of the blue, don’t worry too much.

If your company has enabled Microsoft’s two-factor authentication, then this call is probably legit. But if you don’t work somewhere that uses it, it’s most likely just a mistake - like someone entering the wrong phone number - not a scam.

I got a message asking for a two-step verification for Microsoft stuff like Outlook. I didn’t try to log in or anything, so I reckon someone else might’ve typed in my number by mistake when they were logging in.
