They use some sort of software autodialer that drops the call if no telemarketer picks up at their side. This is getting more and more frequent and it's really frustrating. A market research firm is behind it, and companies like Tesco and Carphone Warehouse shouldn’t be employing such irritating autodialers. But they do, so we end up with calls that ring twice then just hang up - clever tech maybe, but rubbish for customers.

Looks like these calls are from a telemarketing outfit. They seem to handle Car Phone Warehouse "Care calls" (you know, follow-ups after sales or calls) from this number 08454500245. I checked out www.ttmc.co.uk and used their online chat to sort it out. Just be polite with whoever you speak to, they’re not the ones to blame. After a friendly chat, they took me off their list. Nev, you're a total legend! I've tried this method myself, though I charge £50 a minute. I got told to bugger off since apparently I wasn’t worth that much. Funny enough, they never rang that number again. But now, some unknown party (not sure who yet) has my mobile. Today, that same number called but hung up the moment I picked up. Not sure if it’s the same lot or not, but fair warning to others who might want to stop this number from contacting them again. This isn’t a plug or anything, but I came across a free app called Mr Number. It’s been a lifesaver for me because it alerts you if a number’s been flagged as spam, scams, robocalls, plus it shows what country the call’s coming from. You can even block numbers outright, including private or withheld ones, blocking both calls and texts. No one’s reported this number yet, but I’m about to be the first. - Caller hung up as soon as I answered.

Next time one of these survey callers ring me, I tell them my rate is £100 per hour or any part of it, and ask where I should send the invoice. I make clear that if they keep talking, it means they’re agreeing to pay. If they ring back, I warn that the charge doubles to £200 per hour or part thereof. They’re getting paid to do the survey, so why shouldn’t I get something too? I’ve done this quite a few occasions, and it usually makes them hang up pretty quick. Only once did I actually send an invoice, which they initially refused to pay. I threatened legal action to recover fees and costs, and eventually they gave in. Guess what? I got a call from this number saying they were from TTMC Research, doing a customer feedback survey for Tesco. They had no clue about the email I'd supposedly sent, which really made me uneasy, even though they promised not to share my details with any other 'research' firms... still not sure I believe that.
