I’ve just received a call from the same number, and they’re trying to reach me again since I was tied up earlier. However, it’s well past the time I requested for a callback! The chap on the line had a strong Indian accent, which made it rather difficult for me to grasp what he was saying. He claimed to be representing HMRC. Not sure if I should be concerned about this or just dismiss it...

I find it hard to believe that this is actually HMRC reaching out. It feels more like a bunch of data thieves trying their luck. They insisted we ring them back at 8pm the following evening after leaving a cryptic message. Strangely, they wouldn't share any details about themselves until we disclosed certain 'security information', including our National Insurance Number. In all my dealings with HMRC, they’ve never asked for such personal info. They claimed it was about an unpaid bill, but we actually have an appointment with HMRC next month to contest their correspondence. When I mentioned this, they seemed utterly flummoxed! If they were truly from HMRC, wouldn't they be aware of that or able to check into it? It certainly gives off the impression of a scam, and from what I’m discovering, a good number of others think the same. For goodness’ sake, DO NOT divulge any of your private information!
