Phone number ☎️ 08444740101 👆 is reported as a costly and deceptive number frequently mistaken for the official HMRC contact. Users often call it attempting to resolve tax issues, only to incur unexpectedly high charges, sometimes exceeding £40, with long hold times and unhelpful service. Numerous accounts describe it as a scam or premium-rate line not directly affiliated with HMRC, with some callers unwittingly incurring fees by calling back after missed calls or automated messages. Many advise against using this number and stress verifying HMRC’s genuine contact details, typically beginning with 0300. Victims recommend reporting such calls to official fraud and police channels to help combat these fraudulent practices, as traditional call-blocking measures offer limited protection due to spoofed and foreign-operated scam operations.

Avoid ringing this 08444740101 number, I just got hit with an extra £5.36 on my direct debit after a 4 minute call. I was trying to get through to HMRC about a tax refund and thought this was their free number, but clearly it’s not.

08444740101 is definitely not HMRC. This number shows up on Google if you look for the HMRC contact, but it’s a premium line that charges you extra just to link you through. It’s not officially connected with HMRC at all. Make sure you look up the correct HMRC number and double-check before ringing. Avoid using these third-party connection numbers, just call HMRC directly.

The network's refusal to provide assistance is unacceptable, especially given the hefty £42 bill for these phone numbers.

The comments here show how to get in touch with the police systems designed to log EVERY scam call or number. Using TPS or blocking these calls doesn't do much good. These scams are mainly run by overseas criminal groups who use millions of fake or spoofed UK landline and mobile numbers generated by computers. Make sure you report ALL scam attempts straight to the cyber crime unit and let them handle it. Then share your story on this site so others know what’s going on and how to report. It won’t work if only a couple of people report - EVERY scam call needs to be reported.

I missed a call from this number and wasn’t sure who it was. I rang it back because I was expecting a call and just hit redial by mistake. This was back on 20th January. Today, I saw on my landline bill that I got charged £5.90 for a 30-second call to an answering service. I’m proper annoyed with myself for making such a daft mistake.

Total scam - pretending to be from HMRC and the Tax Office. Don’t even bother ringing this number! I’ve already reported it to Action Fraud. My lad lost £5 from his phone credit trying to sort out a tax question with them.

TAX FRAUD ALERT!! Look at the comments below. The issue is, loads of folks still get caught in these scams, which is why they keep happening to everyone. Don't talk to these callers - don't give them any info. Don't answer yes or no questions. It’ll end badly. And don’t ever ring back a random number without looking it up on sites like this. Ringing back unknown numbers without checking is just silly. Scammers love it when people do that. If you’ve called back - even if nothing seemed wrong - have a look at your phone bill, you might have been ripped off.

Got a dodgy call pretending to be HMRC, saying there’s a warrant for my arrest unless I press 1 right away. I hung up straight away, but my phone bill shows they held the line for 46 mins and I was charged £34! Tried getting help from the phone company but they won’t do anything since it was an incoming scam. Best advice - don’t pick up at all!

IGNORE THIS QUESTION!
I fell victim to a false HMRC warning that warned me of an impending arrest if I didn't choose an option. Without hesitation, I ended the call, yet my phone bill revealed that the line was somehow open for 46 minutes, resulting in a cost of £34. Unfortunately, the phone company refused to assist me despite knowing it was an incoming call scam.

I can't believe it! How on earth are they allowed to do this? I was charged £6.80 and made no progress at all. Now, I have to call them again and as a result, I will be charged once more. If I had known about these charges, I definitely would not have dealt with these thieving individuals!

I noticed a charge of £42 on my bill, and I had to wait for quite some time to get in touch with someone from HMRC. The person I spoke to kept asking me the same questions repeatedly. I'm unsure if the number I called was actually from HMRC or if it was a scam. Hopefully, my tax matters have been resolved. Interestingly, the person on the call seemed to have knowledge about where I work.

I’ve ringed 08444740101 a few times lately, looks like four times from my call history. It’s for sorting out some tax stuff back on 21st October 2020. Now I’ve got a £40 bill for these calls. Seems like people have been moaning about this number since 2017. Isn’t there tech to block numbers like this?? Or can phone companies add a beep or warning if the call costs way too much? I’m trying to get my provider to sort it out.

I was trying to call the tax office using what I believed was a free number, but it turned out to be a premium rate line, even though the call should have been free. It was the first number that popped up when I searched online. HMRC really need to make sure their official contact info is easy to spot in search results. I’m just trying to pay my tax and ended up getting ripped off!

I got billed for three calls made to this number about a tax question for HMRC. My phone bill shot up loads after calling 08444740101 just three times. Took me ages to figure out it was an HMRC number. Their website is awful and I ended up paying £9 for a 10 minute call where I was left on hold while trying to sort out an issue. So useless, honestly. I can’t help but agree with what others are saying. Why no one keeps an eye on that website? We’re forced to use it to file our tax returns. What a terrible situation we’re all stuck in these days.

I was shocked to discover that I had been billed £11.40 for a phone call concerning my tax return. The tax official I spoke to was absolutely unhelpful, which resulted in the call lasting a frustrating 57 minutes. To add insult to injury, she reassured me four times during the conversation that I could call back anytime, as their lines were open until 9pm. Now I understand why they are available for such a long period of time. It's truly disgraceful to witness this abuse of power by a government organization.

this is really unfair, you have to ring them up to clear up a mix-up they caused, then waste an insane amount of time for no good reason and end up paying an outrageous fee. is this how the government thinks they’re looking after us? honestly, I feel like becoming a modern robin hood, taking all their cash and using it to actually help folks. it’s a proper daylight robbery, but backed by the law - couldn’t sum it up better myself.

What a disgraceful situation! I recently discovered on my monthly bill that I've been charged £8.72 for a call I made to my local council offices regarding the theft of my National Insurance number and its use in a scam to gain access to my bank details. To make matters worse, they were unable to provide any assistance or advice whatsoever. They simply directed me to the job centre for any further queries or concerns. It's incredibly frustrating! In the event of being a victim of fraud, there seems to be nobody available to talk to except for the job centre, and they don't offer much help either. It's truly unhelpful! Why doesn't the government offer any support or guidance to people who fall victim to fraud? How can they get away with this? They are the ones who hold our personal information, which is constantly at risk due to their lack of adequate security measures. Their priorities lie solely in profit rather than safeguarding the public!

I experienced difficulties in receiving my tax allowance, so I had to make a phone call regarding the matter. Surprisingly, I was never informed about any charges that would incur from this call.
