When you ring, you get put through an automated system that sounds just like something Barclays Bank would use, making it feel like you’re dealing with the real bank. But you’re not. The person who answers pretends to be from Barclays and claims there have been suspicious transactions on your account. They then ask if you made those large purchases. If you say you didn’t, they want you to use your card on the Barclays Pin Sentry device to sort out the fraud. They’ll then ask for the code from the machine. Once you give them that, the call abruptly ends and they’ve managed to steal your money straight from your bank.
