My lad found this number online and rang HMRC with it, thinking it was legit. But then he got a £40 bill on his phone because it was an 0843 number! The right way to call HMRC is through their website, www.gov.uk, using the 0300 numbers which don’t usually cost anything from mobiles. Be careful out there!

I rang that number tryin g to reach the tax office helpline, but just ended up waiting ages with no answer until I gave up and hung up. Cost me £7.60 in calls. Such a waste!
