Seems like people don't get it here. This number belongs to dodgy scammers (and I'm not saying HMRC are saints either, they can be dodgy too). These fraudsters put their number all over the web so when you look up HMRC TAX REFUND, their contact pops up top like it’s an official HMRC line. It even looks legit since HMRC numbers used to start with 084... What they do is forward your call to HMRC, probably a free or cheap number, but they charge you an arm and a leg for making the connection. Absolutely terrible crooks and scammers. Report them to the police and insist your phone provider hands over their info.

I rang HMRC to try and clear up an issue they caused, expecting to get some help, but out of nowhere ended up being charged £17! They never told me beforehand about any extra fees. It’s absolutely wrong and should be against the law to hit people with premium charges without a clear warning. It’s just awful how they profit from folks who are already struggling with problems. Proper nasty behaviour.

This number belongs to the HMRC office. There was nothing said about any extra fees, but the call costs 55p per minute. I called to deal with my tax stuff, and after talking for 28 minutes, my bill came to more than £15. It's not some sort of scam, just a bit frustrating that they didn't give a heads-up about the charges.

Apparently this is a so-called "official" HMRC number that connects you straight to them. HMRC really ought to look into this. Loads of people ring this number expecting to get help with simple things like tax codes or Child Tax Credit advice. But the calls end up costing £10 to £30 each time, and HMRC never mention any charges upfront. This is definitely a scam and since HMRC know about it, they should be made to pay people back quickly.
