I got a couple of calls within a day from some call centre using info from Guardian subscribers. Since I used to read Guardian and my info was probably collected properly, I don't really feel fishy about it. Just found it odd getting called twice like that.

Received a call from this number earlier today. When I picked up, I greeted them with a hello. For a fleeting second, I caught some chatter in the background, which led me to assume it might be a call centre. However, shortly after, the line went completely quiet, even though they didn’t end the call. I tried saying hello again but got no reply, so I decided to hang up.

I recently got a phone call claiming to be from the Guardian newspaper, promising some sort of discount and a free trial of their papers. The catch was that after the trial period, they’d ask for payment, and naturally, they wanted my bank information. In a moment of weakness, I ended up sharing my home address and email with them, but I was wise enough to decline providing any debit card details. The caller was fairly persuasive, I must admit.

I just let it ring out without picking up. After a brief silence, the answering machine played a recorded message saying, "thank you for calling."
