Received a text message stating: "Barclays is carrying out a fraud investigation. Did you authorise a transaction of £2124 at Argos UK on 15/09/16? If so, reply with Y. If not, please ring 0843..." My daughter found this message queued up and ended up waiting on hold for a staggering two hours just to speak to someone. After calling the number shown on her Barclaycard, it was confirmed to be a scam. Now we’re left anxiously anticipating our next phone bill.

I managed to speak to a rather irritable chap who demanded my sort code and account number. Thankfully, I was booted off the call before I could divulge anything. After spending an hour trying to reconnect, I reached out to Barclaycard purely to verify the number, and it turns out it was a scam. Quite the inconvenience, and now I’m out £9.00 in phone charges!

Got a text on the 1st of September 2016 that read: "Did you make these transactions? - £824 - ARGOS UK - 01/09/16. If so, respond with Y; if not, ring 0843 289 3185." A quick search revealed that this number used to belong to a barn conversion sales outfit listed on Cyclex or Hotfrog, but it seems to be defunct now. Furthermore, the service number prefix indicates it might be a premium rate line, so my advice is to steer clear of replying! Interestingly, I’ve come across a few articles suggesting that hackers can access your number from afar, leading to charges on your account-even if you never made contact. Doesn't bode well for those contracts, does it? 😉
