Yeah, its really the CSA behind this, just had a chat with them. Seems like over the last 20 years with several systems in place, even when the absent parent has been paying, the money isnt always been given out properly! So now theyre sorting it out. I found the CSA number on the .gov site, picked the option about cases something like before 2003 I think, then got transferred to the team in Scotland who confirmed everything for me.

The phone rang twice and as soon as I tried to pick up it cut off. Since I need to press a button to actually answer, I usually don’t bother if the number’s unknown unless I’m expecting a call. I tried calling back and got a voicemail saying, “You were not available when we tried to reach you, we’ll call again later.” Assuming it’s the CSA, I honestly have no clue why they’d be calling since I’ve never used them for maintenance collection. Just so you know about the number thing: when CSA calls, they use a central number regardless of where in the country they’re calling from. It’s partly to protect their advisors or case workers from being harassed or threatened. But when you call back, you get a different number that connects you straight to the local office handling your case, which means less waiting around and fewer transfers before you speak to the right person.

It really was the CSA that phoned me once - they wanted to let me know they were transferring my closed case onto a new system and discovered I had some arrears due. I reckon it’s rather prudent to answer when they request your date of birth; it's quite customary for individuals to use that as a security measure. They're just aiming to confirm they're speaking with the actual individual and not some random. Wouldn’t you prefer they verify identities instead of possibly divulging your confidential matters to just anyone? It’s actually the DWP CSA (Child Support Agency), so no need to worry or call the police. They’ve been trying to reach me about my own CSA case. What I’d say is you should try ringing them back because it might be quite important. When I finally got through, I found out there was a few hundred quid owed to me from my ex for child maintenance arrears, so it could be some backpayment linked to an older case. If you have a child and the other parent doesn’t live with them, they might be contacting you about child maintenance. I don’t think you can phone this number back directly, but if you’re in Leicester, this is the CSA contact number: 0345 609 0062. Different areas might have different numbers though. I’d definitely recommend getting in touch as soon as you can. Hope this is useful! :)

They left a voicemail telling me to ring back and have my national insurance number handy, claiming to be from the DWP. But when I dialled the number they gave, it actually connected me to Sacred Heart. When I looked up the phone number online, it ended up here on this site.

Got a couple of calls at home within an hour from someone claiming to be from the DWP. They kept asking my missus about me, but she didn’t say a word and they refused to give her any details as well. What a pain!

I got a call from someone claiming to be the DWP or CSA saying I had an old debt from years ago connected to the Secretary of State. They said if I paid straight away they'd knock off 25%, but they never asked for any personal info like my DOB or NI number. When I started to ask questions they just hung up on me. Definitely feels like a scam to me!

For instance, if you search for something like 08007838527, you might also pop in 0800 7838527 or even 0800 783 8527. You’ll be surprised at what Google throws your way, such as forums related to benefits and work. Don’t forget to mix it up with formats like 0800-7838-527 too. It’s all about casting a wider net!

I’ve got a disability and find it hard to reach my BT landline, which I mostly just use for internet, not calls. I rely on my iPhone a lot, especially since I’m hard of hearing and it’s easier to listen on loudspeaker. This number keeps ringing me, but by the time I manage to get to my phone, they’ve already hung up! When I tried calling the number back, I didn’t get a person, just a recorded message saying something like “sorry you weren’t able to take our call, we’ll try again later.” This has been happening all last week, and now again today - calls dropped before I even pick up, and no way to ring them back! They should at least leave a voicemail explaining who they are and how to get in touch because it’s not always easy for me to answer right away. Since it’s an 0800 number, which is free, I’m sure most people wouldn’t mind returning the call when it suits them.

I've been doing some sleuthing over the past few days, and contrary to what has been said previously, I can't uncover any proof that this number is linked to the DWP, CSA, or any other governmental body. In fact, it has all the indicators of a phishing scam, so the wisest course of action would be to simply disregard the call entirely.
