Be warned, this is a scam! Banks never ring you unexpectedly like that, nor do they ask you to confirm your personal info over the phone.

Today I got a call from someone saying they were with HSBC who wanted me to do some security checks before explaining why they were calling. Earlier this morning I’d joined an HSBC webinar about fraud and cyber security (definitely useful!) which warned about calls like this possibly being scams. One tip was that if you log in, the caller’s name from HSBC should show up on the Call Status screen so you can double-check it’s legit. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to do that this time but if they ring back, I’ll make sure I keep them on hold until I can verify it properly.

Got a call from someone saying they were from HSBC. They wanted me to ring back and speak to someone, but I couldn’t catch the name properly because the connection was really poor. In the end, I dialled a proper HSBC helpline number I trust. Still waiting though, it’s seriously dragging on.

I tried calling HSBC to ask about a charge on my credit card statement, but the call got cut off. Then, they rang me back using this number and managed to sort out my query. Yep, it was definitely HSBC that time.

I reckon it was someone from HSBC giving me a ring. They weren’t asking for any personal details or anything like that. Instead, they were checking up on a bunch of transactions, asking why they were made and where the money was coming from. Sounds like some sort of anti-money laundering investigation, if you ask me.

Today I got a phone call from someone saying they were from HSBC asking for my security pin. I thought it was fishy straight away and hung up quickly. Then I rang HSBC myself to check, and they told me they hadn’t called me at all. They also double-checked the phone number and said it was a scam for sure.

Here’s another update on this - I left a comment on the latest one and also on the comment it mentioned. It was my first day back at work since these calls started happening, and turns out the IT team has been trying to get in touch with people. Honestly, I wish they’d quit it. When I submitted a service ticket last week, I clearly gave my working hours. Calling me outside those times just raises doubts, plus I wasn’t even at the office then, so there was no way they could’ve fixed anything with me.

About a day ago, I flagged this number on here; I’m the one who said I work at HSBC in the earlier post. Well, they rang me back today. I picked up, and they claimed to be from HSBC, but the call was so crackly I couldn’t catch much beyond that. Thing is, it didn’t sound anything like the usual calls I get from work mates. I just ended the call, and right away, they tried ringing again, so I just went and blocked the number straight away.

Got a phone call from someone pretending to be from HSBC, saying we owed £3,000 and needed to pay up. I told them the accountant wasn't available, then suddenly they started speaking in some language I didn’t understand, maybe to someone else on their end. After a bit, they came back on the line, wished me a good day, and then just ended the call. Quite obvious it was a scam.

Loads of folks are saying this is HSBC, but I never picked up and, as someone who actually works at HSBC, I’m pretty sure it isn’t them because: First, no voicemail was left, and according to our company rules, they always leave a message. Second, my banking is with First Direct, the part of HSBC I work for, not HSBC itself. Lastly, even though HSBC or First Direct might call for various reasons, none fit my account since I just use it for paying bills each month, not regular transactions.

It was HSBC calling but I didn’t pick up straight away since I didn’t know the number and let it go to voicemail. I’d previously grumbled that their customer support could only call mobiles and not landlines, pointing out that a landline at least means someone’s actually at home, unlike mobiles which anyone could have. The voicemail they left was delivered so fast and with such a strong accent that I couldn’t make out a single word. Guess I’ll have to wait till they call back to find out what it was about.

I had been chatting with HSBC about an issue with my credit card, and the lady promised to ring me back if the call dropped. It did disconnect, and shortly after, I got a call from this 0800 number. She already knew the start of my postcode and asked me to confirm the end, then wanted my DOB too. I got a bit nervous, thinking it might be dodgy, so I ended the call before giving any more info. The voice did seem like the same person I spoke to earlier, but I wasn’t taking any chances in case it was a scam.

I never actually got an answer when they rang but they did leave a voicemail. It was clearly a scam. What was bizarre is that in the message they kept changing their name - at first they said they were CR, then switched to Dan, and in the end said it was Victoria. Total mess up!

I reckon this is one of those scams. Got a call from a “Lee Francis” who said he was from HSBC, but I don’t even bank with them. The voicemail sounded proper as it gave out a real HSBC contact, but since I’m not a customer, there’s no way they should’ve got my details. I'm the same person who commented yesterday about Ravi. When I missed the call, HSBC followed up with an email and some official paperwork on their website, asking me to reschedule the call. The person who rang was the same guy and he went through the details I’d filled out on a form, checking everything was correct. After we spoke, I got another email confirming my bank card was set up. I couldn’t answer as I was tied up, but later got a voicemail from a guy named Ravi I think, with a pretty thick accent. He said he was from HSBC and wanted to chat about my business application to clear up some things. He mentioned he was working round the clock and would ring me back in about 5 minutes. Still caught up, so didn't pick up then. He also said he'd give me a call early the next morning. I've seen loads of mixed opinions online, which made me a bit wary, but so far it seems alright. I'll probably post another review after I’ve had that call tomorrow.

I received word from HSBC on the 19th of April, 2024, that the number 08007838422 isn't associated with them at all. So, if you answer a call from that number and the person on the other end claims to represent HSBC, don't be fooled by their seemingly professional manner as they request your details. They're simply trying to con you, and you shouldn’t feel embarrassed about it. The scammer tends to get quite agitated when challenged, attempting to rationalise their call with nonsensical excuses, like saying they operate from 'numerous outgoing lines' or it's just an 'outbound call centre'. It’s all nonsense, really. Just don’t engage with them!
