I've gotten two calls in two days now with a recorded message saying sorry about issues with our water, but we haven't noticed anything wrong. The second message was barely a sentence and pretty difficult to make out what they were saying. Seems like they expect you to ring back on what looks like a freephone number.

This don’t sound legit at all. They keep calling with a weird scrambled message, asking me to press buttons to either listen again, go to some other message (I guess) or delete it. But we’re always told not to push any numbers with these calls.

Got a call from Severn Trent about a water outage in the SY part of Whitchurch, Shropshire. Had a look and the number they used is legit.

I just checked this number and it’s from Severn Trent Water. Their website shows where the leak is and lists this number too. They’ve got workers and vans on our main road in South Normanton fixing it right now. These calls are basically to keep us informed about when the problem will be sorted.

On Thursday, the 18th of February, just after half past two, I received a call from a chap claiming to be from Severn Trent. He requested that I verify my current address as well as a few past addresses. When I mentioned that I wasn’t comfortable sharing all the information he sought, he abruptly stated that, because of the Data Protection Act, he couldn't proceed any further with his questions. He then provided me with this number to call back: 0800-7834444. Honestly, I suspect this might be some sort of scam, so I won't be returning the call.

Got a recorded call claiming to be from Severn Trent water. It said “Important message, press 1 to hear it.” Surely a legit water company wouldn't ask you to press anything to listen? Feels dodgy to me.

Got a call from this number and figured it was another scam, so I didn’t bother pressing 1. I checked the Severn Trent site and entered my postcode in their search tool. It showed two areas with issues nearby, one about half a mile to a mile away reported pressure problems. So it might actually be legit. I’d say instead of pressing 1, just head to their website to check things out yourself.

Got a call at 4.33pm on 13/01/21 claiming to be from Severn Trent Water. They told me to press 1 for an "important message." But we get our water from Yorkshire Water, so why would Severn Trent be contacting me? I just hung up. Then, 4 hours later, they called again - hung up straight away once more!

It seemed to be a legit call from Severn Trent Water. The message asked us to press button 1 for more info. My husband suspected it was a scam, so he ignored it but noted down the number anyway. The call came around 11.30am. Later, when he was out driving to pick up our Sunday lunch from a restaurant, he spotted a burst pipe just a few streets from home and then understood the call was real. Just thought I’d share a genuine experience here. The phone number was 0800783444, and it was a freephone number.

Got a call on my home phone this morning asking me to "Press 1". Looks like the Severn Trent number might be faked. People checking this number here are from places like London, Sheffield, Manchester, Cambridge and Warrington. None of these are covered by Severn Trent, they have other water suppliers. Really sketchy if the recorded message said it was from Severn Trent.

This morning at around 10 o'clock on Wednesday, 25th of November, 2020, I got a rather odd phone call. The voice on the line instructed me to press 1 to hear a message about some water issues affecting local residents. In a moment of weakness, I pressed the button, only to be treated to a message about murky water in my vicinity. I've come to understand that it was all a sham, which honestly leaves me quite uneasy.

Sounds like a typical scam to me. It was one of those automated messages warning about something happening nearby but never said exactly where. Then it asks you to press a number. Why would a genuine alert need you to do that? Probably just a way to keep you on the line and send you to some call centre trying to grab your personal details. Classic scam move.

This really is a legit call - a recorded message from Severn Trent Water letting you know about an issue with your supply, or maybe that it’s been fixed. It’s NOT a dodgy number, so go ahead and press 1 to hear the message.
