I’ve fallen victim to this too! I placed a quick 15-minute call to the UK from the hotel reception in Mexico, and it ended up costing me a staggering £31.13! The phone card I was using was priced at 50p per minute for calls to the UK, which felt utterly outrageous. There was absolutely no mention of the charges beforehand, and I didn’t receive any kind of notification about the cost until well after I had hung up. Quite frustrating, to say the least!

On the 11th of January, we found ourselves stranded at Frankfurt airport thanks to the heavy snow back in the UK, which resulted in our flight being scrapped. We were rerouted onto another flight heading to Frankfurt instead. Lacking any Euros, we had no choice but to use a payphone, swiping our credit card. To our astonishment, after a brief chat that couldn't have lasted more than a minute or so, we received our statement and were hit with a whopping charge of £29.97! We’re absolutely baffled about who to get in touch with to rectify this situation, especially since we're keen to avoid additional fees by calling a customer service line!

Following your advice, we fired off a complaint via email and, lo and behold, got a response that mirrored yours, offering us £17 in credit. It feels a bit cheeky, doesn’t it? We found ourselves in a bit of a pickle after using our credit card for a call from St Thomas. The first ring was related to nothing we could hear, so we tried again using a different phone, and that call went on for a good ten minutes. I contacted 0800 for satellite communications, seeking assistance. Their customer service informed me that there were no details on the telephone box regarding charges. I expressed my concern about the cost of 31.13, which seemed rather steep for a brief call. As it turns out, the conversation lasted just eight minutes, making the charge a whopping 3.48 per minute - equivalent to seven times the rate of an Adviser telephone card! The representative assured me she was there to assist but then placed me on hold for a good five minutes. When she finally returned, she mentioned that they didn’t recognise those charges and that they would be crediting us in full. I'll hold my breath until that actually occurs.

What an absolute rip-off! The sheer audacity of it all is as clear as day; it’s obviously a scam that’s being supported by the mobile networks involved and the company that operates the kiosk. It’s hard to think of a better example of obtaining money under false pretenses. I highly recommend directing complaints to the likes of BAA, Network Rail, BT, and others. Perhaps even "Which?" or the Consumer Watchdog might decide to lend a hand. That said, it’s worth noting that our fare at Victoria station is merely £2.40.

I just rang this number to request a VAT receipt for an £8 charge made to a credit card for a call lasting under ten minutes within the UK. To my surprise, an American voice answered, explaining that this is a satellite phone service and that you apparently need to press a number to find out about any charges.
