I received a call from a tech support firm claiming they could help me eliminate a nasty virus from my PC, but they were asking for a hefty fee of £99!

I can't quite wrap my head around how trying to set up Norton Utilities (a complimentary addition with my standard Norton antivirus I purchased from PC World) led me straight into the clutches of these fraudsters. After entering my personal details along with the Product Key, I was promptly met with an error code and instructed to call 08005200409 for assistance. What ensued was a rather absurd 50-minute conversation with two different so-called engineers, which oddly included a tutorial on Trojans via Wikipedia. They then had the audacity to demand £249.99 to supposedly eradicate 46 Trojans from my IP address, claiming the charge would be processed from my account within 5 to 6 days. I couldn't shake the feeling it was a ruse to access my bank card details! I diligently took screenshots of their claimed scan results, detailing the number of Trojans, foreign IP addresses, and the so-called plan of action the engineer was proposing, and saved them on my C:/drive. Ironically, those screenshots mysteriously vanished. I'm now reluctant to even try installing the antivirus software again for fear of the chaos that may ensue! Interestingly, the Product Key for the Norton Utilities had the word "HACK" in it; can’t help but wonder if that’s just a coincidence or a warning!

This phone number has caused me an absolute fortune! Just yesterday, I forked out £99 to Microsoft to get my computer drive professionally cleaned and fixed so I could actually use it again. It’s utterly appalling! I’d been receiving peculiar phone calls and decided to reach out to Microsoft about it. They reassured me that no one could gain access to my PC. However, when I logged into Facebook on Thursday, I was met with a barrage of messages from friends, all bewildered and asking why someone with my name was sending out friend requests - when I was, in fact, already connected to them. One friend even shared a message that had been sent their way, complete with a picture of me, my name, and everything. How in the world did that happen?! Honestly, it’s beyond ridiculous! We’re constantly told to invest in antivirus software, so I bought some just last month. Yet, here I am, still feeling vulnerable. After all this, I had no choice but to hand over £99 for Microsoft’s assistance, since my Norton support said they couldn’t help unless I paid £300 at first, then they reduced it to just under £100. Turns out, the issue was on the server level - not your run-of-the-mill virus that merely messes with files. How on earth could this have occurred?! I was given such peace of mind not long ago by Microsoft, only for them to turn around and charge me this sum for help. It was imperative; this computer is my sole link to the outside world. Without it, I wouldn’t even be able to get my groceries. I’m feeling absolutely miserable and terribly isolated after all that's unfolded. The harsh reality is that I’m financially strained after this expense and will struggle to afford food now. I truly hope these individuals are tracked down and that there’s a possibility of recovering this money. As for the callers, three names were provided to me: Ivan, Niyamath, and a lady who claimed to represent Norton.

I received a dodgy call from this number, where the caller was after remote access to my computer. They claimed that a trojan had somehow made its way onto my system and were demanding nearly £250 to fix the supposed issue. Total scam artist behaviour!
