In June, I got a few calls from the same number, about three times. The woman mentioned something about an accident compensation thing but when I asked how she got my phone number, she just ignored the question and kept pushing me for personal info. She didn’t even know my name, which made me feel uneasy, so I ended the call. After each call, I also received texts saying “please ring 0800 269 322 about the Accident Compensation Corporation and mention reference number XXX.” She never really spoke properly, so I’m pretty sure she wasn’t an official representative.

Received a call at about 11:45 in the morning, they said it's about some account follow-up. They told me they'd be sending a letter and even asked for my address. I'm a bit anxious, hoping everything's legit and safe.

Picked up the call but they just dropped it right away. Then I got a text saying it was from ASB bank, telling me to get in touch and mention a ticket number included in the message. I've never had any business with ASB, so I’m pretty sure this is some kind of scam.

This number keeps ringing me and every time I pick up, they just cut the call straight away. Today was different though, a really rude woman came on the phone asking me to verify my information. I asked her where she was calling from before sharing anything, but she wouldn’t say and started threatening me, saying they’d take some kind of action and note on my record that I refused to cooperate. Imagine that! I just ended the call right in the middle of her threats. Shortly after, I got a text telling me to ring another number. No chance!

So the number popped up on my caller ID, and since I’ve got voicemail set up, I let it ring through. I’ve been using this system for quite a while now and here’s what my recorded message says. Seems to do the trick alright.

“Leave a message after the tone, and I’ll get back to you. No message, no call back. Cheers.”

They call and then hang up right away, or sometimes they let it ring through and when you pick up, there's just silence. I think they do this so you ring them back because as soon as the call ends, I get a text like “Hello Caitlyn, please contact 0800 436 322 about QBE and reference 1720661.” I’ve had this number for more than 10 years, brand new from the start. Never been anyone called Caitlyn here. My name doesn’t even start with C or K, and it’s nothing like that name actually. Plus, I’m a bloke, not female. It’s definitely a scam trying to snag your information. When I called them to ask for my number to be removed, they proceeded to ask loads of personal questions, trying to trap me in. Just block the number, it’s not worth it.

Got a ring from some waste management company the other day. They wanted me to verify my info, including my birthday and where I live now. I told them we don’t use their services at all, so I wasn’t about to share anything. The bloke then claimed I had a bin with them, which I admitted was true but it was like two years back. He said fine, he’d send me an email about it and then just cut the call. Be careful and don’t hand over your personal details!

Got a call late in the evening from someone claiming to be from waste management. I asked why they needed my info and why I never got any emails from them. She didn't have a proper answer. I pay for my bin yearly in advance, so there’s no way I owe anything. I’m not bothering to return the call.

I used to work for ECCC and just wanted to say, not every debt you hear about is legit. Like, take your customer ACC - they're seriously dodgy, totally full of it. Can't trust them as far as you can throw 'em, honestly.

This supposed Head of Collections they mention in their scam letter is totally made up. The 0800 number they give is no longer working. The debt they're chasing isn’t real either. Turns out, this dodgy outfit is linked to the Turners Group.

On the evening of 12th April 2019 around 7:30pm, someone rang trying to get hold of my dad, who wasnt in. They left a voicemail with the number and said to get back to them before 16th April. Tried calling back recently but the line either just rings twice then cuts off or it’s constantly busy. I’m honestly cracking up reading all these replies. I used to have a job at EC Credit Control, which is situated in Napier, NZ. It’s a company that deals with chasing debts, so when they ask you to verify your info, it’s just the legal stuff. I know Channel, Shayl and Jimmy - they’re not made up, I actually worked with them before. The reason you see their names in the messages is because your debt has been assigned to them. You can chat to anyone there, but you gotta confirm your full name and date of birth first. Honestly, maybe people should try not getting into debts in the first place!

Someone called me saying they were from EC Credit, claiming I owed money and needed to sort it out. But the phone number, the email, and even their bank info didn’t add up at all. Sounds like a total scam trying to get people to hand over cash. Don’t trust them or send any money!
