Called twice over the past few days. The second call was a polite-sounding young woman claiming to be from the DWP. She asked my elderly dad to grab his bank statement and read out the six-digit sort code plus account info. Thankfully, Dad was sharp enough to say we never share that kind of info on the phone. The moment he said that, she just cut the call. My Dad’s been retired for years, and I’m almost certain the DWP already have his payment details. It’s just disgusting how some folks target older people like that - truly heartless behaviour.

I said I found it hard to believe they'd be working over the weekend, and the person said "Yeah, they keep us busy all weekend, mate." The number actually belonged to the DWP - they rang me to verify it was really me applying for my state pension through the gov.uk site. I called them back using that same number, and they explained that all new pension claims done online have to be verified like this or your pension payments might get held up.
