This number keeps ringing me loads throughout the day with automated messages. The voicemail says something weird like “you must continue to prevent further calls,” which honestly makes no sense to me. One of the messages said it was NatWest, but real NatWest calls usually come from 0345 numbers, so I’m pretty sure this isn’t legit.

Got a text saying "Urgent matter, please ring us on 08001615987. Ulster Bank." I checked with my actual bank first and then reported this straight away.

They rang me really late, like 3 or 4 in the morning, and I usually don’t pick up unknown numbers. A couple days earlier I did answer, just said hello, and some bloke said hello back on the line - it was quite unsettling so I hung up. Then they called straight away again but I left it.

In the UK, 0800 numbers are supposed to be free to call. I missed the call and didn’t pick up quick enough. This feels like a new trick to me. Seems tempting to ring them back since it’s free, but I wonder if they can just forward you to some premium rate number instead?

The person on the phone didn’t say who they were or where they were calling from. They kept asking for someone I’d never heard of. I told them they’d got the wrong number, but they said this was the landline they had and wanted me to confirm I didn’t know the person. I repeated it was the wrong number. Then they asked me for my street name, so I just ended the call.

Someone called saying they were from RBS. I told them I don’t use RBS so why am I supposed to call back straight away? They mentioned NW and since I do have a NW credit card, I rang them to double check. They said they hadn’t been in touch and to just ignore the call.

This was from Ulster/Mint/Natwest/RBS Collections for a credit card. I wasn’t too sure about it so I made up a ‘Natwest-style’ card number (correct BIN, 16 digits, passes the LUHN check - those years working in Card Services IT come in handy sometimes). Managed to get through to Jodi, who gave me the lowdown on the number. I told her it sounded like it could be a scam, and she said she’d relay my feedback about the automated system not mentioning the group name. Plus, she pointed out that instead of ringing the 0800 number they provided, the proper thing would be for the card-holder to call the number printed on the card itself.
