I called British Gas using a number I found on a bill to check if this number was a scam and the operator told me it’s actually a legit number for submitting meter readings!

Got a message on my answerphone saying there’s an unpaid British Gas bill and this number was given to ring back. I knew this wasn’t right so thought it might be a scam. When I called 08001070258, it sounded like a British Gas payment line. But this 0800 number ain’t on my actual gas bill as a contact for payments. Feels like they’re trying to trick you into giving your personal info like bank or card details.

My spouse was hounded by this number persistently ringing her regarding a payment issue, so she decided to reach out to British Gas for clarification. To her surprise, they acknowledged that it was indeed one of their contact numbers. It seems that her mobile had been incorrectly linked to a different account - and she has never shared her number with BG! I’ve got to say, this number is definitely dodgy! A pal of mine who works at BT looked into it and found out it’s linked to a location in Bangalore, India. Absolutely no ties to British Gas, despite what they claim. If you ring British Gas directly at 0800 048 0505, they’ll confirm it. Apparently, this lot is trying to ditch this number after bothering so many folks - both customers and those who don’t even use their services! It’s a right nuisance, to be honest.

Greetings! We're absolutely bombarded by calls from this number - at least three times a day, I might add. It's always a right nuisance, especially when I'm busy at the office, and they leave a robotic voicemail, harping on about some alleged outstanding bill. We did give them a ring back and actually got through to a chap who claimed it could be their sales team trying to drum up business. Honestly, it's baffling, considering we haven't been customers of BG for the better part of two years now! So, my advice? Just steer clear of this number, you'll be better off.
