I can confirm it’s the real deal. I received a correspondence stating, "we have funds secured in xxxx xxxx’s account, kindly reach out." My father passed away over a decade ago. Like many others in this situation, I was quite sceptical, so I reached out to Nationwide's bereavement department. Surprisingly, the letter is indeed legitimate, though I can't fathom why it took a staggering 11 years for them to reach out in the first place.

I received a call from someone purporting to be from Nationwide Building Society, stating that I needed to get in touch with this number to register the bereavement before I could access my late mother's accounts, as I am her 'personal representative'. However, it's quite puzzling since my mother passed away quite some time ago, and everything was taken care of back then. I'm starting to wonder if the recent passing of my wife has prompted someone to dig up an old, inactive account in a bid to defraud me. It honestly feels a bit dodgy to me.

Once the call ended, I decided to reach out to Nationwide’s head office directly using the number from their official site. Much to my surprise, it turned out the call was indeed valid! They were able to link my separate account with the restricted one, allowing me to finally access the balance that had been locked away.

Please, for the love of all that’s good, don’t engage with any letters that purport to be from a bank and ask you to reach out to them. It's just a scam.
