I got a call claiming I was owed money from the crown because of some company that supposedly didn’t exist anymore. I got a letter claiming HSBC was holding some money of mine and that I could claim it by having it sent to my current account. The letter looked pretty legit at first glance, but the logo was a bit blurry and the printing colours didn’t seem quite right, which gave me a bit of a bad feeling. The letter said they’d already tried to contact me but hadn’t heard back. They were asking for all sorts of stuff - bank account info, personal details, DOB and even a recent bank statement.
I ended up looking the phone number and email up online, and loads of people had flagged it as a scam on different websites. Turns out 0800 085 2416 is linked to a bank scam. This seems like a serious scam to me since they openly request all your banking info. It’s really worrying because I reckon it could easily fool some older folks who might not be as tech savvy.

I got a letter supposedly from HSBC saying they owed me money from ages ago, but right away some things felt off to me. The little details didn't add up. I searched the phone number online and it wasn’t the official HSBC number, plus the email they used seemed kinda dodgy. They also asked me to send a copy of my bank statement, which made me even more suspicious. Curious, I rang the number provided. A woman with a Welsh accent answered pretty quickly, but honestly, I didn’t trust her one bit. Afterwards, I googled the phone number from the letter and it brought me here. I reckon loads of people might get tricked by this, especially after getting that call. How do you think these scams can be stopped?

I received a letter that looked really proper and well made, saying it was from HSBC and giving a helpline number like this one. It claimed I could get some money back if I provided my current bank info. I used to have an account with them years ago, but this whole thing felt a bit dodgy to me...

Just because you get a call from them doesn’t always mean you’re currently with the bank - it might just be from when you had an account there in the past.

I don't have an HSBC account, so when someone said they were from HSBC bank, it definitely felt like a scam to me.
