Im chatting to action fraud right now, and the guy had a proper British accent. When I said I needed to call Santander to verify, he goes, “Sure, but only after you give me the code to cancel the payment.” Normally they just tell you to ring the bank and make sure first. That’s when I realised it was a total scam. Scam as hell!

I got a text from this number with a one-time password after attempting to buy something online using my credit card. The wording in the message seemed strange, so I didn’t use the contact details in it. Instead, I called Santander on their usual number, not the 0800 085 0986 one from the text. I ended up speaking to their fraud team, who confirmed the message and code (which I didn’t share with them) were genuinely from them.

About the numbers 0800 085 0986 and +447782583822 - I'm completely baffled now. My Amazon order for a PC got put on hold, then I got two texts from Santander. I didn't respond, ‘cos I thought they might be dodgy after reading stuff on here. But yesterday (Friday 15 Nov '24), I popped into my local Santander branch and told them everything, including those two numbers. They ran their own security checks and, surprisingly, both numbers are confirmed to be from Santander’s Fraud Department. They say they're genuine!!! I honestly don’t know what to believe anymore!!!

Total rip-off, just like what others have said. They seem to have access to nearly all your info from some source. Then they try to get you to say a one-time code that's texted while you're still on the phone.

Been warned before about this and now it happened to me too. Got a call pretending to be from Santander, very slick and believable, asking me to confirm payments with OTPs they said were from earlier messages from Santander - made it seem totally legit. Watch out, it’s a nasty scam.

Like someone else mentioned earlier, this scam is pretty dangerous and really clever. They pretend to be from Santander and ask you to confirm payments using OTPs from earlier Santander messages, which makes it seem totally legit. Be careful!

I can verify this is a bank scam. I received a text about a card payment over £700 that needed approval with that number included. Right after, my phone rang from a private number, someone pretending to be my bank. I ended the call right away and called my bank directly. Sure enough, it was a con. NEVER trust these calls - always hang up and contact your bank yourself!

Got an email that looked legit from PayPal saying I’d paid for MacAfee security. When I asked about it, they reckoned they knew my recent PayPal buys. Then I got an OTP text, supposedly from Santander, asking me to enter it. The message mentioned Azizi developments in the UAE and a charge of 5999 AED, roughly £1200. I rang Santander straight away, and they found the fraud attempt on my account. They froze my account and are sending me a new card now. Watch out, folks!

I got an email that looked really like it came from PayPal, saying I’d paid for McAfee security. When I asked about it, they somehow knew about my latest PayPal payments. Later, I got a one-time code from Santander to enter. The message talked about a payment linked to Azizi developments in the UAE for 5999 AED, roughly £1200. I rang Santander straight away, and they confirmed someone was trying to get into my account. They've frozen it and will send me a new card. Watch out for this scam!

Got a call pretending to be Santander telling me to say out loud a one-time code they’d sent me. Honestly, never do that - even the message said not to share it! I just made up some excuse and phoned Santander directly using their official number, and sure enough, it was a scam. These tricksters rely on making you panic, but real banks won’t rush you like that. They’d let you check things when you’re ready. Always make sure to call your bank on a number you know is legit, not one given during the call.

Is this Santander? Maybe it is! BUT you can never really know who’s on the other end. Scammers have copied all sorts of phone numbers from banks, making it really tricky. If your bank contacts you, hang up, make sure the line is clear, then ring your bank back using the number on your card. Don’t wait too long though, because the call could be legit and you might have an urgent issue to sort. Also, be careful - scammers sometimes report genuine bank numbers as scams online to trick people into blocking them. If you’re unsure, always call your bank directly to check.

It's a trick to get you to call the 0800 number. They say press 1 for credit cards and 2 for debit cards. No music playing at all. Then as soon as you press, someone just goes “Hello”, which didn’t sound professional at all. I got a bad feeling and hung up. Later I called Santander from a different number and the way they answered was totally different. I didn’t share any personal info with that 0800 number but I can see how it could be risky. Don’t ever ignore a call from your bank that you weren’t expecting. It’s best to ring them back using the number on the back of your card to make sure it’s legit. Banks can call from loads of different numbers, so it’s hard to tell if it’s for real or some scammer trying to steal your money. Some scammers even put fake red alert warnings about genuine bank numbers on here to trick people into blocking them or reporting to ‘7726’, which then makes your phone provider flag those numbers as scams everywhere. Always double check!

Got a dodgy text pretending to be from Santander asking to ring a certain number. My elderly mum called it and ended up giving them her name and dob! Thankfully, we called Santander straight away and they told us it was a scam number.

Sounds like it was one of those really tricky phone scams.

Look at the post from 15/03/22 on this thread. PLEASE READ IT. For your safety - READ IT ONCE MORE. Keep in mind scammers try to get bank clients to block legitimate bank numbers and might leave fake bad reviews about those numbers. You really can’t be sure if any message or call from your bank is legit. Nor can you trust all the posts here - whether they’re marked red, green, or whatever. Remember, banks often use loads of different numbers to contact their customers by phone or text.

08000850986 - received three messages supposedly from "Santander" saying a payment of £17.80 was being processed and asking for an OTP? I didn’t know the amount or the payee. Got suspicious straight away and checked this number here. It looks real but something feels off. I’m not going to send the OTP, don’t think this is actually Santander.

Apparently Santander called about a payment that supposedly happened after the actual date it was made.

They tried to con us, pretending to be from Santander. Sent a one-time password and wanted me to give it back. Total rubbish, big scam!

This number is part of a text scam pretending to be from Santander. The message tries to seem legit by including Santander’s phone number ******3123. There’s a number in the middle of the text that’s highlighted, but it’s fake and if you call or ring it, you end up talking to a scammer.

The text I got seemed real. I didn’t feel comfortable phoning the 0800 number in the message, so I rang Santander’s real customer service instead. Turns out the payment mentioned in the text was legit. Someone tried to use my card fraudulently, so they cancelled it and sent me a replacement. I’d definitely suggest contacting Santander’s official number. I nearly dismissed the alert after reading this site, but I’m glad I checked!

They claimed to be from Santander, messaged me saying I needed to send an OTP for a £1000 payment. I've never even dealt with the firm they mentioned, seems dodgy to me.

If you got asked to call this number during an online purchase and they want your phone to send an OTP, its probably Santander. But if it’s a text or a call out of the blue, it could be dodgy. They might check some info to make sure it’s you, but they’ll never ask for your PIN or security code.

Was paying my phone bill through their app like I usually do using my debit card, and normally it goes through fine with a receipt emailed to me. But this time, as soon as I entered my card details, I got a message claiming to be from my bank saying they were sending me a one-time password (OTP) to my phone and asking me to enter it to confirm my card. Never seen this sort of thing before. I rang the number from the message and spoke to a friendly woman who was quite eager for me to give her the OTP. I just ended the call politely and closed the app straight away. Number was 08000850986.

The number 08000 850 986 is definitely a scam, I checked with Santander. Their actual number should be 0800 9 123 123. Don’t trust that other one!

Got a couple of texts pretending to be from Santander (we dont even use them) saying it was a OTP (had to look that up!) for a payment to some pension firm. They told me to ring a certain number if I'd asked for the OTP, even if the caller said they were from Santander. Quite clever, but clearly a con!

21/07/20 - Was trying to verify my card when shopping online at a major supermarket, and got a "transaction failed" message. I called the 0800 085 986 number linked to the bank provider to sort it out. Checked my account and everything looked fine. A few hours later, the card verification worked fine on the same supermarket's website. So for a bit, this message kept popping up after I tried paying at checkout. I’d be careful calling that number as it might be dodgy.

I’ve been getting loads of texts from a number saying it’s Santander, about 12 so far, with 6 just in the last half hour. They keep telling me money’s been taken from my account, but I don’t even have an account with Santander. They want me to ring 08000850986 or text another number. Please don’t call or reply, just get in touch directly with your bank, even if it’s not your bank, and let them know what’s going on.
