A message popped up on my PC saying my security was at risk and to call a certain number. I actually rang them and they ended up taking control of my computer remotely. Luckily, I managed to wiggle out of it by saying I needed to go pick up my grandkids, and I dodged having to pay anything or getting my computer messed with.

I recently encountered a rather alarming experience with a number that was linked to some rather loud and incessant announcements in an American accent. The only way I found to silence it was to mute my speakers entirely! The whole situation was presented on a rather posh-looking screen that claimed to be from either BSkyB or Microsoft. It was quite insistent about the urgency of ringing this number, insisting that I shouldn't shut down my computer for fear of losing data and encountering an unrecoverable error. The message read something along the lines of, "Urgent security alert! Kindly ring the number provided immediately to receive guidance on eradicating adware and spyware from your device. The pop-up notifications you're seeing indicate a virus on your system, which jeopardises the safety of your personal information. It's highly recommended that you contact the number listed to sort out your computer issues before making any online purchases." - caller: computer virus.

In addition to what I shared earlier: I reached out to Eset, my antivirus provider, regarding this matter, and here’s the response I received: "Thank you for your query. Rest assured, this is absolutely a scam. It’s designed to intimidate you into dialling the number, where the individual waiting on the line will attempt to persuade you that the alert is legitimate and that you’ll need to purchase an expensive support contract to fix the so-called problem."

In the past couple of days, I've received three calls, not to mention a handful last week. Each time they claim to be from Windows, I simply bid them farewell and disconnect the call.
