A message popped up on my PC saying my security was at risk and to call a certain number. I actually rang them and they ended up taking control of my computer remotely. Luckily, I managed to wiggle out of it by saying I needed to go pick up my grandkids, and I dodged having to pay anything or getting my computer messed with.

I kept getting nonstop calls from this number, with a loud American voice looping a warning I couldn’t stop unless I muted my speakers. The screen looked super official, saying it was from BSkyB or Microsoft, telling me not to switch off my PC or I might lose all my files and get an unrecoverable error. The message went on like: “Urgent security alert. Ring the number immediately to get assistance removing adware, spyware, or viruses from your computer. These popups mean your device is infected and your private information is at major risk. Please call now before you do any online shopping.” Honestly, it felt like a total scam to scare people into calling them.

Just wanted to add to my earlier comment: I contacted Eset, the company behind my antivirus, about this, and here’s the response I got from them: “They confirmed it’s a fake. It’s basically a scare tactic to get you to ring the provided number. Once you do, the caller tries to persuade you that the alert is real and pushes you into buying an expensive support plan to fix the supposed problem.”

In the past week I've gotten loads of calls, and just in the last couple days three more. Whenever someone starts talking about Windows, I just tell them bye and end the call straight away.
