10 yearsI received a rather suspicious call that appeared to be from overseas, and naturally, I picked up, what with having a daughter residing in Australia. On the other end was a woman with an Indian/Pakistani accent, claiming her name was Mary. I pretended to be a bit dim, repeating her every word back to her. Essentially, she informed me that my computer was supposedly transmitting harmful files and that Microsoft was eager to intervene! Then she transferred me to a colleague, who also spoke with the same accent and introduced himself as Joe, claiming to represent Microsoft Windows. I mentioned I was recording our chat, and surprisingly, he seemed quite pleased about it. He provided me with a so-called unique number, 888DCA60, asserting it was my computer's identifier. He then requested that I access a particular file on my device. I told him I remembered him having reached out to me previously, and after I outright dismissed his requests, he ominously threatened my life, though he quickly reassured me that such words weren’t typical of him. At that juncture, I suggested that I would get in touch with Microsoft directly, to which he urged me to call him back using the number 08000664780 and to specifically ask for "Joe Brown." I couldn’t help but chuckle and acquiesce! The sole reason I entertain these callers for a few moments is to buy time and prevent them from reaching some unsuspecting soul right away. Quite frankly, I didn’t have much else going on at that moment!AustraliaMaryMicrosoftJoeJoe Brown11 yearsWhat a right con job! They completely fleeced us, didn't they? All we received was this phone number and absolutely no other details or website to refer to. It’s utterly frustrating!11 yearsThese individuals are nothing but con artists! Stay vigilant and steer clear of them!11 yearsCheers for the heads-up! It really helped me avoid the hassle of dialing up Oscar West on 0800 066 4780 and potentially getting fleeced. Much appreciated!Oscar West11 yearsI contacted this number thinking it was the McAfee antivirus support line. I ended up allowing the caller to access my computer, and he attempted to persuade me to fork out £200 for virus protection, despite the fact that I’ve already settled my McAfee subscription until 2017. Honestly, it’s baffling who we were actually speaking with.12 yearsI received a call from this very same number, and the person on the line claimed that my Windows computer was at risk of being cut off from the international network due to my failure to heed previous warnings they had supposedly issued. After amusing myself with their persistent inquiries, I casually mentioned that I actually use a Linux computer. At that point, they backtracked and acknowledged they had dialled the incorrect number!13 yearsA chap named Allan Jones called looking for computer services, and it turns out our Grandad got taken for a ride by him.
