08000584229 Summary (Read all comments)

Phone number ☎️ 08000584229 👆 is reported as associated with a sophisticated PayPal scam involving fake payment requests for large sums, often citing purchases of software or electronics. The scam begins with seemingly genuine emails urging recipients to call the number if they did not authorise the transaction. However, the number connects to fraudsters who use convincing scripts and recorded messages to extract personal information by asking security questions. Victims caution against calling the number or clicking any links in such emails. Instead, users should log into their official PayPal account directly via a browser to verify and cancel any suspicious payment requests. Reporting the scam to PayPal and taking swift action, such as changing passwords and monitoring bank details, is strongly advised.

The correspondence appears to be authentic from Paypal, yet the actual payment demand is a scam. Instead of clicking on any links in the email, make sure to log into your Paypal account directly via your web browser. Once you're in, you'll find the payment request there. It’s best to cancel it immediately and report the email to Paypal's fraud department. This scheme is likely designed to entice you into calling a phone number to sort out the cancellation, which you can easily handle by selecting the cancel option. Most likely, you'll end up speaking to someone who will probe you with security questions . . .

I just got a similar PayPal notification from someone named Annie Schmidt. I've gone ahead and informed PayPal about it straight away.

Like many others, I've got an email notification: ChristianRobert Sanchez has requested some funds. MESSAGE FROM ChristianRobert Sanchez: Just a heads up, You’ve made a payment of £899.99 to ESET NOD32. The email appears to be legitimate, but the content certainly isn't. It’s a scam trying to fish for your personal information. They've been using a recorded message from PayPal to lull you into a false sense of security. I’m about to enjoy myself by toying with an Indian call centre. Take care, folks!

Someone said they were from PayPal, asking for a big sum of money and telling me to call this number if I hadn’t made the request.

Typical PayPal scam. I tried checking the number myself and still got put through to dodgy scammers. Really unsettling stuff.

Got an email today (15th Dec) claiming I made a PayPal payment of £899.99 and asking me to call this number if I hadn’t approved it. Obviously a scam, so I didn’t bother calling the number (+44 0800 058 4229).

I received a payment request from this number, claiming to be associated with PayPal, but I can assure you, it’s not legitimate! Avoid calling it at all costs, as it directly connects you to fraudsters. The BBC has made mention of this scam, particularly regarding unsolicited payment requests linked to this number. Stay vigilant and don’t fall for it!

Here we go again with PayPal. It appears to be the real deal, but trust me, it’s a con. This number definitely doesn't belong to PayPal. MESSAGE FROM ANGELA WOOD: You've just transferred a whopping £899.99 to Bit Defender LLC. If this payment seems dodgy, get in touch with our Customer Service at +44-800-058-4229.

As someone mentioned earlier, it appears quite authentic but is indeed a con. This isn’t the genuine PayPal contact. The email states: MESSAGE FROM CARL MYERS: You have sent a payment of £899.99 to Bit Defender LLC. If you believe this transaction is unauthorised, please reach our support team at +44-800-058-4229. I promptly logged into my PayPal account and saw there was a request for £899 (The fine print in the email also mentions $899.99 HKD). While in my account, I attempted to locate the same phone number in the PayPal Help section and, to my surprise, I seemingly found it - it was the exact number listed in the email, and regrettably, I gave them a ring. Looking back, I’m left wondering if I truly found that number on the official PayPal site or if I'd stumbled onto a phoney version. I’d never typically call a number provided in an email. For reasons unknown, I foolishly picked up the phone. They proceeded to ask me a series of security questions (which, it turns out, I had never set up), and to cut a long story short, I deduced it was a scam; however, not before I inadvertently divulged some sensitive information. I've since cancelled all my cards, which should save me a few quid over the festive season. Quite the lesson learnt! This scam is rather sophisticated; I never thought I’d fall for something like this. Must keep my wits about me!

I'm convinced this is a scam. I've just been hit with another request for a payment via PayPal - this time for some 'Bit Defender' at a whopping £899.99, supposedly from Amy Richardson. The previous one was from someone named Rene Pintor, asking for a staggering £1400 for an iPhone 14 on the 27th of November. I've attempted to ring this 0800 number multiple times, and it's all a bit odd; sometimes, they claim to represent Amazon, other times they say they're from a McDonald's in Richmond, Surrey, or PayPal. Every time I ask for verification of their identity, they promptly hang up on me. Honestly, these emails look incredibly genuine!

I've encountered the exact same issue today. I went ahead and as a precaution cancelled my PayPal payment. Additionally, I've taken the step of removing my banking information from PayPal altogether. It appears they're managing to breach PayPal's security somehow.
