08000584229 Summary (Read all comments)

Phone number ☎️ 08000584229 👆 is reported as associated with a sophisticated PayPal scam involving fake payment requests for large sums, often citing purchases of software or electronics. The scam begins with seemingly genuine emails urging recipients to call the number if they did not authorise the transaction. However, the number connects to fraudsters who use convincing scripts and recorded messages to extract personal information by asking security questions. Victims caution against calling the number or clicking any links in such emails. Instead, users should log into their official PayPal account directly via a browser to verify and cancel any suspicious payment requests. Reporting the scam to PayPal and taking swift action, such as changing passwords and monitoring bank details, is strongly advised.

That message really is from Paypal, but the payment request itself isn't legit. Always check your Paypal account by going straight to the website yourself, never use links in emails. Once logged in, you'll spot the payment request and can easily cancel it. Also, be sure to send the suspicious email to Paypal's fraud team. The whole thing seems designed to make you ring the number they give, probably so they can try to get your security info over the phone. Just cancel it online instead, no need to call.

Got a message that looked like it was from PayPal but it was sent by someone called Annie Schmidt. I went straight to PayPal and told them about it.

Just like loads of others, I got an email that said: ChristianRobert Sanchez has requested money from you In the message it was written: You've paid £899.99 GBP to ESET NOD32. If you didn't authorise this purchase, get in touch with customer support at +44-800-058-4270 Sounds dodgy to me!

The email itself seems legit, but the message definitely isn't. It's just scammers trying to grab your info, using a fake PayPal voicemail recording. I'm about to have a laugh messing with some call centre in India. Be careful out there!

Someone said they were from PayPal, asking for a big sum of money and telling me to call this number if I hadn’t made the request.

Typical PayPal scam. I tried checking the number myself and still got put through to dodgy scammers. Really unsettling stuff.

Got an email today (15th Dec) claiming I made a PayPal payment of £899.99 and asking me to call this number if I hadn’t approved it. Obviously a scam, so I didn’t bother calling the number (+44 0800 058 4229).

I just got this dodgy email claiming to be from PayPal, but it’s definitely some sort of scam or phishing attempt.

Its a scam telling you youve got a PayPal money request. Dont ring back or send any cash, just report it straight to PayPal.

This looks like a really smart Paypal scam. Don’t bother calling back. Just check the legit info directly from Paypal’s official site.

I got a PayPal payment request with this number on it, but it’s definitely NOT from PayPal. Don’t ring them back - it’s just a scam call. The BBC even did a piece about this scam where they use this number to trick people into paying something unknown. Be careful!

Got another call pretending to be PayPal. It seemed legit at first but turned out to be a con. Definitely not the real PayPal contact. NOTE FROM ANGELA WOOD: You have just sent £899.99 to Bit Defender LLC. If you didn’t authorise this, please reach out to Customer Support at +44-800-058-4229.

Like someone else mentioned, this seemed legit at first but was definitely a con. The email wasn’t really from PayPal. It said: NOTE FROM CARL MYERS: You Sent a Payment of £899.99 GBP to Bit Defender LLC. If you didn’t authorise this, call Customer Support on +44-800-058-4229.  I quickly checked my PayPal account and saw an £899 charge request (the email also mentioned $899.99 HKD in tiny print). I tried to find that number on the genuine PayPal site’s help section and thought I found the same one, so idiotically dialled it. Looking back, I’m not even sure if I was on the real PayPal page or some fake website. Usually, I’d never ring a number straight from an email, but for some reason I did. They asked me loads of security questions (which I hadn’t set up) and long story short, I realised it was a scam - though only after giving away important info. I’ve cancelled all my cards now, just in time for Christmas spending! Honestly, I never thought I’d fall for something like this. Lesson learnt though - you have to stay extra careful out there!

This is definitely a scam - I just got another PayPal payment request, this time from Amy Richardson for £899.99 to buy some ‘Bit Defender’ software. A few days ago, on 27 Nov, I had a similar one from Rene Pintor asking for £1400 for an iPhone 14. I’ve called their 0800 number a handful of times, and weirdly, sometimes the person on the other end says they’re from Amazon, sometimes McDonald's in Richmond Surrey, and other times PayPal. Whenever I ask them to prove who they are, they just hang up on me. The emails are shockingly convincing, though!

Like someone said before, it seems legit but it’s actually a con. This isn’t a real Paypal number. I got an email saying I’d paid £899.99 to Bit Defender LLC, and if I hadn’t authorised it I should ring customer support on +44-800-058-4229. I jumped onto Paypal and saw a pending request for that exact amount. Then I searched for that number in Paypal’s help section and thought I found it there, so I foolishly rang it. Looking back, I’m not even sure if I was on the real Paypal site or some fake one. Normally, I’d never call a number straight from an email, but for some reason I did this time and now I’m embarrassed. I know it’s a scam for sure so I’m cancelling all my cards to be safe. I’ve also changed my Paypal password even though I never gave out any info, which makes me wonder how they managed this. Proper scary stuff.

Today, I experienced the exact same thing. I ended up cancelling the payment through PayPal and even took out my bank info from my PayPal account. Feels like they’ve somehow found a way to hack PayPal accounts.
