Yesterday, my mobile received a total of five unanswered calls from a certain number. Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to dial them back this morning. To my surprise, it turned out to be Nationwide. However, they had not made any attempts to reach out to me, and there were no issues with my accounts whatsoever. The staff at Nationwide were extremely helpful and conducted a thorough check surrounding the situation. As it turns out, these calls were part of a scam.

After receiving calls from this particular number on both my mobile and landline phones, I opted not to respond and decided to verify the number by contacting the helpline for my Nationwide Account. To my surprise, it turned out to be a legitimate call. Someone had made two unsuccessful attempts to use my card at businesses that I had no affiliation with. Nationwide immediately took action by blocking my credit card and arranging for a replacement. I must say, they were extremely diligent and provided excellent assistance throughout the process.

They told me there were a couple of attempts to buy stuff online from a company I don’t know. Nationwide also confirmed the rest of my card transactions were legit. Despite receiving multiple calls from them, Nationwide has confirmed that they would not contact customers via phone; instead, they are more likely to send a text. These scammers seem to have obtained my name, and although I expressed my suspicion of them being fraudsters and promptly ended the call, they persistently called me again on another day.

This number has been ringing me quite a bit. The bloke on the other end knows my name but I’ve no clue who he is. He’s also used various numbers to reach me, which I’m jotting down here. Most calls come in the afternoon, but there was one on a Saturday as well. I’m pretty sure I know his voice so I just hang up straight away, but it’s a bit unsettling. Seems like he’s figured out how to spoof the numbers.

I felt compelled to provide an update on the rant I expressed earlier. It turns out that the number in question does belong to Nationwide, and I have confirmed that they do have a legitimate fraud prevention office based in Coventry. Legit Nationwide Card Services. If you make the call yourself then you’re probably alright. But if they ring you first, there’s no real way to be certain they’re who they claim to be or calling from where they say. This goes for any incoming calls really. Banks really need to stop the annoying habit of phoning and then asking for your security details to confirm it’s actually you. They should just quit doing that!

I noticed a strange £126 charge on my online bank statement while doing my usual check. I called NW straight away, they cancelled my card right away, gave me the £126 back, no other charges have shown up since and they’re sending me a new card. This 0800 number had kept ringing me loads but I never picked up - now it’s blocked. I suspect they’re scammers exploiting the card fraud system to mess with your money even more. It’s my first time dealing with card fraud, fingers crossed it’s the last.

Got a voicemail from "Nationwide Fraud Dept" so I called my local branch and got put through to their main fraud team. They told me there was dodgy stuff happening on my credit card - someone made a purchase in California while I’d been filling up petrol here in the UK just hours apart. I just rang Nationwide and they said they know about this scam. Even though the number appears to be a real Nationwide one when you get the call, the caller has actually cloned it so it seems legit. DON'T share any personal details with them. Hello, this number has clearly been cloned. These scammers are very slick. The woman on the line sounded genuine, and my phone showed it as a Nationwide credit card fraud number. But when she started asking for security info to verify me, I got suspicious. She told me to call back, but I know if you ring from the same phone they keep the call open, so you’re just speaking to them again, not the real number. I told her I’d go to the branch instead. When I did, they said nobody had tried to reach me. BE CAREFUL!

He popped into the branch today and they said there’s no record of anything suspicious on our account, plus they said they only get in touch via automated messages and never ask us to ring back. Anyone saying this is a cloned call is mistaken and just causing unnecessary panic! I phoned them back myself (after confirming on their site) and it was the FRAUD DEPARTMENT making sure no one was misusing my account. TOTALLY LEGIT AND SAFE!

HI ALL. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS NUMBER - IT’S BEEN FAKED. It looks legit but if you ring it back, you’ll end up with scammers, NOT THE REAL NATIONWIDE. My wife owns Nationwide cards but I dont, still we both got calls from these folk. Our surname starts with H and is kinda like a name mentioned here, which makes me think they’ve grabbed loads of names like ours and are trying to trick anyone not paying attention. If you really need to get in touch with Nationwide, use another phone, better a landline.
