A scary pop-up showed up on my screen telling me that my credit card info and passwords were being stolen, and it gave me this number to ring ... 08000418266 ... I phoned it and some guy with an Indian accent said he was from Microsoft. He asked to remotely access my PC to "fix" the issue. I didn’t trust it and refused to let him in, then I ended the call. Now, the annoying warning won’t close at all! I’ve tried shutting down my laptop but it just won’t disappear. If anyone knows what to do, please help!

Honestly, I always tell my mates to double-check any phone number they come across before calling. It just makes sense these days. I typed the number into Google and this site popped right up. Closed my laptop straight away. Sadly, my wife had already talked to them for ages (and like others have said, it probably cost us) and ended up giving them access to her laptop for hours. What a nightmare!

So my laptop suddenly popped up with this scary warning and I freaked out, called the number it showed. They somehow got into my laptop and started pointing out loads of viruses it supposedly had. Before they asked for any payment, I gave them my email like they requested. Then they said it would cost me £300. I’ve shut it down now and will send it off for a proper repair. I’m also planning to freeze my bank account just in case they manage to access anything there. I’m really anxious that they might still hack into my stuff since they have some of my info. Do you think I should contact the police first thing tomorrow?

I had a similar experience, did they manage to grab any of your info? Also, were you able to shut the window down? I'm kinda stressed about it.

Can anyone tell me how to shut this popup? It just won't go away no matter what I try.

This message pops up loads for me, and the only way to fix it is by using task manager to close the browser completely. Then you’ve got to open it again and be quick to shut the site down before it happens all over again. It’s a bit of a pain really.

I'm definitely planning to report this to the cops - it’s a total scam. My cousin’s laptop suddenly showed some loud warning and I freaked out, ringing the number since it wasn’t my laptop. They demanded £200 for some fix on the software, which I found absurd. Told them I’d just take it to a proper shop instead and then they just cut the call. Haha, the police need to shut these scammers down quick!

My computer suddenly blasted a loud warning, and in a bit of a panic, I called the number they showed up without checking online first. They said they were here to help with some kind of infection, but once they mentioned charges starting at £199, I got really suspicious and ended the call. After that, I contacted McAfee since I already have an account with them. They ran a full scan and found nothing wrong, explaining that the warning was actually just adware trying to scam me out of money. McAfee then cleared the adware from my browser to wipe any traces. It's only just happened a short while ago, but so far I’m told my laptop should be safe now.

I got a call from someone pretending to be Microsoft saying they could "repair" my laptop that was supposedly banned or blocked, and wanted me to pay £200 for it. Total scam, don’t trust these folks!

My old laptop popped up with this number and I ended up spending close to two hours on the phone with them. We didn’t think much at first, but it turned out they never checked if an adult was answering, even tho I told them I’m underage. After all that time, we finally asked which company they were representing, and the bloke just said “I’ll transfer you to my manager”. My mum ended up shouting at this so-called manager for ages. Honestly, don’t ring this number - we got a bill for about £70 because of the call!

I got a message pop up on my phone so I rang back, and this bloke started poking around my laptop. Suddenly, he clicked on the camera, and that’s when I figured it was dodgy. Now I’m pretty worried - can they still access my computer? He also got me to download some app called Go To Assist or something. Do you reckon they can still get into my device with that? Feeling a bit freaked out here.

I phoned them, but as soon as I got put through to someone in India, I ended the call straight away. After that, a bloke answered so I told him I wasn't interested in buying anything at all. They rang me again but I just didn't pick up. I cleared my browser cache and wiped my saved passwords, so fingers crossed I’m alright now. No further hacking attempts so far. Looks like BT must've sold my number to these plonkers.

Today I got a warning on my computer from this number saying I had a virus. When I called them back, they told me I needed to pay to remove it all. But my dad told me it was just a scam, so I ended up shutting my computer down.

I had a really bad experience where they got into my 7 year old's laptop. When I wouldn’t share my bank info, they started saying I shouldn’t even be in the UK. Now the laptop won’t work properly and they’re demanding £300! They basically took over my computer and were messing about with it. So annoying and stressful.

Never ever ring this number, it’s a complete con. If your PC is acting up, remember Microsoft don’t cold call you or show any phone number in pop-ups to call them. Total scam, just ignore it.

I was just watching football on my laptop when suddenly a message appeared telling me to ring this number 0800 041 8266. I gave it a go and the person on the other end claimed there were multiple people connected to my laptop and that my information could be at risk. They tried to charge me £99.99 for a basic cleanup and another £150 for a full network clean. I didn’t pay a penny though. Then the bloke asked me, 'So what are you going to do about it?' which felt a bit off to me. I just said I couldn't afford it and ended the call. I'm now wondering if this was actually Microsoft or just a scam.

I keep getting this annoying pop-up telling me to ring this number, and it just won’t clear from my screen. Had the exact same thing happen with a different number before, same message, which I managed to block. Big thanks to the folks who shared their experiences here - I’m just gonna brush it off and assume it’s some kind of scam. Odd thing is, these messages only appear when I’m on the Magic Jigsaw website.

Somebody got into my computer and said I had to pay £1,100 or it would lock up. I just switched it off for about an hour, then turned it back on and did a scan. Luckily, everything seems fine now.

I got a call while I was on my computer, and the number they gave me was supposedly to get in touch with them. They claimed to be from Microsoft and Windows Defender, and even the website they showed me looked genuine. They said my PC was infected with a virus and wanted my bank info. If I closed or ignored the message, they warned my computer would be blocked to protect their site. They had me follow some instructions to fix the issue, which I did, but then they asked for remote access. They didn't seem happy at all when I hesitated about this. I then logged off, hoping my PC would be fine, and after waiting a bit I turned it on again. Luckily, it booted up fine and I ran a scan using my antivirus software, which found nothing. Definitely a scam, so be careful about this phone number and any others they might give you!
