As per usual, some bloke with an Indian accent called, using a very English sounding name, and asked if I was the primary user of Microsoft or some sort of computer stuff. I answered ‘NO’ and he just said “then buzz off” and ended the call. Strange behaviour! Could have turned into a decent convo though. Might try answering next time with something like, “Hello, you’ve reached the Scam Defence Unit. What’s your business?” Or maybe just blast out a loud referee’s whistle!

Got a call from someone saying they were from BT, telling me my computer was hacked and they could prove who was spying on my internet. They wanted me to run a NETSTAT command, but being an IT bloke, I played along. I asked them if they believed in karma and warned that they'd get back all the bad stuff they were doing, multiplied. Then, out of nowhere, they just hung up. Bit weird if you ask me.

I received a rather peculiar phone call today from someone with a distinctly non-British accent, likely hailing from India. This individual claimed to be a representative of BT, suggesting that I had been overcharged to the tune of £202 over the past year and that they were keen to refund me. The caller proceeded to ask for my address and date of birth to verify my identity. Confused by his heavy accent, I requested that he articulate his words more clearly. Following this, he mentioned he would escalate the matter to his manager. A different person then took over the line, inquiring about the expiry date of my debit card, to which I provided a fabricated date. On the 16th of November, I got a call from someone claiming to be from Visa. They said there was a £900 purchase being made on my card and asked me to press 1 if it wasn’t me. I didn’t press any buttons and just hung up straight away. When I checked with Visa later, they told me the call wasn’t genuine and there was nothing unusual on my account. They said it sounded like a scam.

I played along for a while, then mentioned I was tracking the call back to their call centre since I supposedly work with the police cybercrime team. They quickly lost their cool, started swearing, and hung up on me. Just a heads up: Microsoft never calls you out of the blue like that.

The message was playing before my answerphone even kicked in, and I was outside so didn´t catch who it said it was from. It sounded like some kind of subscription was about to renew and that either me or my missus would be charged. They then said press 1 to ask for a refund or to keep the subscription going, or press 2 if there was a problem to sort out. I didn´t press anything, I´m checking this number with you lot because all our subscriptions get renewed by post or directly via the bank, never by phone.

Today I got a call from a mobile number 07944 891999 saying my Amazon Prime subscription was renewed and they had taken money out of my bank. Thing is, I don’t have Prime since I rarely buy stuff from Amazon, so why would I pay for it? I just hung up straight away. Later, I looked at my bank statement and luckily no money had been withdrawn. I then contacted Amazon’s official customer support and they confirmed it was a scam and no charge had been made. I’m quite careful about these things but it makes me worry how many people might get caught out by this.
