Today at 5:42 pm I got a message claiming my smart meter’s credit was all used up and asking if everything was alright. They told me to get in touch at britishgas.co.uk/contact-us if there was any problem. Thing is, my credit hasn’t run out at all.

I’ve had legit messages from British Gas before, so I’m pretty sure this one’s a scam. Definitely doesn’t seem genuine to me.

Then I double-checked my gas bill and couldn’t find that number anywhere. After having a look on your site, it turns out it’s a scam trying to hack into your phone. Be careful!

So I got a text supposedly from “British Gas” saying they’d be texting me from another number to ask for meter readings. Then, sure enough, I got a message from that new number. I replied telling them to stop as British Gas isn’t my energy provider. This isn’t the first time I’ve had texts from “British Gas” about meter readings and payments, it happens quite a bit.

Just received a message from someone named Joseph Valente claiming to be from some apprentice scheme. I decided to look the number up and found out it’s linked to a British Gas scam before. The text said something like: Looking for 10 Plumbing & Heating Ltd company owners making over £200k and wanting to double profits in three months, doing less work. It asked to text back 'DOUBLE' if interested. The message ended with an opt-out link to https://tx.vc/o/a8372. Pretty dodgy if you ask me.

BEWARE SCAM! Got a text pretending to be British Gas asking for a meter reading. I didn’t respond, instead I logged into my British Gas online account and there was no request like that waiting for me. Normally, British Gas would send an email about this, so I checked my inbox and there wasn’t a single email from them. I’m convinced this was just a scam to try and hack my phone. Don’t fall for it, don’t reply to messages like this!!

Got a text first saying there was a sailing leaving Calais for some bloke called Mr Gunaratnam. Then, about three hours later, I got another one, apparently from PO Ferries, saying the trip was delayed. Both messages had links to click on, but my phone flagged them as possible spam - which I thought was spot on.

WARNING: scam alert! If you get any dodgy calls or texts, make sure to report them straight to the police fraud site. Just search for ‘action fraud’ and head over to the official ‘police.uk’ website. Find the section for reporting phishing or scam attempts and read all the info carefully before submitting the details. Include any links or website addresses if you have them. Got a message from British Gas asking for my meter readings to keep my charges correct before any tariff updates. They wanted it sent like G1234 or G12345 E12345. Then later, I got another one from them saying they had already messaged me earlier from a different number, and it’s fine to reply to that one to get the reading sorted. Cheers, British Gas!

Looks like the BG website isn’t working right now, tons of folks trying to put in their meter readings at once. But the page that actually loads says it’s fine to leave it a bit and submit the meter reading later, so no rush. I’d just ignore that message from the mobile number you got and have a look at the BG site yourself. The scam reports and numbers listed there are legit, but this one probably doesn’t need to be reported.

Got a text asking how my experience was at a car dealership I’d been to, said it was from their main office. They even mentioned the exact place I visited, so it seemed pretty legit at first.
