I got a message from this number claiming to be Tenants Advice, but it’s obviously fake. They even put the real Tenants Advice phone number in the text to trick you. Total scam, best to ignore and not respond.

Just got a call from "British Gas" saying, "Hello Mr W S Reid"... which isn't me at all. They've got the wrong person and there's no way they should have my mobile number. They want me to ring an 03332 number if I'm struggling to pay. Got texts from them on 14th Nov and another on 27th Dec. Bit odd, honestly.

Got a call from an unfamiliar number with a message like: “BOILER IQ ALERT: Your Boiler IQ appears disconnected so we're unable to track your boiler. To resolve, ring 0333 202 9621 or hang tight and we’ll contact you. Calls won’t exceed standard 01/02 rates.” After checking out some earlier posts, I reckon it’s dodgy. I’ve blocked the number and chucked the message after dropping a note here.

Got a text saying British Gas couldn’t get hold of me, and apparently their letter got sent back. Weird timing since I was actually expecting to hear from them. I always look into new numbers that pop up and, wouldn’t you know it, this one’s already been marked suspicious.

I got two texts saying they're from the British Gas Returned Mail Team. They claim they've tried posting me letters about my account but Royal Mail sent them back. Now they're asking me to reply with the address I want them to use!

My mum got a phone call from BG on 07786200698 telling her that I'd be sent another number to send meter readings to. She ended up texting them the readings as requested. After looking into it, we realised it was a scam, so we told her to block the number and just not answer if they ring back. We’ve now put the actual readings in through the official BG website ourselves.

Got a message out of the blue asking for my gas and electric meter readings, which struck me as odd since British Gas usually don't text me, plus the account's under my wife's name. Then I got another text also claiming to be from British Gas saying I'd be contacted from a different number to give my readings and to "keep calm, it’s us". But why would they not just send the original request from the same number? Seems fishy to me, both messages might be part of some scam.

Got a text pretending to be from British Gas, but it’s a total scam. I’ve never seen a genuine message that isn’t clearly tagged from British Gas themselves. Plus, the wording was a bit off, not how they usually write. The message said something like: “From British Gas. To make sure your usage is billed correctly before any tariff changes, please send a meter reading for gas and electric like this: G1234 or G12345 E12345. Cheers, the British Gas team.” Felt dodgy right away.

Received a text that looked really legit, saying I needed to click a link to put in my gas meter readings before some price changes kick in. Got a text looking like it was from British Gas asking for my gas and electric meter readings. Usually, they text from a short 5-digit number starting with 8**** though, which made me suspicious. So, instead of replying to the message, I went and put my readings in through their website. The site was quite slow, probably because loads of people are doing it today after Martin Lewis mentioned it!

On 31st March 2022 I got a message from 07786 200698 asking me to send back my electricity meter reading like €12345 or d12345 if I have a two-rate meter. The message said it was from British Gas and they needed the info to bill me correctly before prices change. After I said no to some life insurance people from Freedom to Insure, this number messaged me out of the blue. They wanted me to share my bank details like sort code and account number, which I obviously didn’t do. Then they sent another text that had a link, maybe asking for a Trustpilot review or something, but I just got rid of the whole message without clicking on anything.

Got a call from this number on my phone and I didn’t have a clue who it was. Might be British Gas since I’ve been dealing with them lately, but it seemed odd for them to ring me in the middle of a Saturday afternoon. I got a message just like the one someone posted on 19/02/21, supposedly from British Gas’s returned mail department. It said they tried sending a letter about my account but Royal Mail sent it back to them. They wanted me to reply with my correct address. They also said if I’d already contacted them in the last 24 hours, I could ignore it. I’d actually been chatting with them on my personal phone about something work-related, so thought about checking it out. But after reading what’s on this site, I’m just gonna ignore it!

I've had contact with British Gas before, but never through my mobile phone. This week alone, my mobile's been hit by two scam messages. I'd never gotten any unexpected calls or texts on this number until now. I've reported both incidents to my energy supplier. One of the messages said something like: "from british gas returned mail team. we tried to send you a letter about your account but royal mail sent it back to us. please reply with the correct address. if you've already contacted us in the past day about this, just ignore this message."

Got a text about cancelling my British Gas boiler service for £65 cause they’re supposed to be super busy. My mum nearly fell for it but luckily I double checked the number first.

Got a text saying they offer next day delivery on PPE plus free face masks. Since PPE is really hard to come by right now, I doubt they actually can deliver it that quick. Best to steer clear of this one!

Got a text saying I owe 494 for some think2claim fee. They want me to pay it by BACS to sort code 16-16-23, account number 14884701. Told me to reply ‘paid it’ once done. Also said if I wanna talk to the payments team I can call, or if I haven’t got my refund yet, they’ll sort it out for me. Bit confusing but that’s the message.
