I recently received an invoice stating that I had sent an international SMS to a particular number. To my surprise, I got charged for this message. However, the strange thing is that I have no recollection of sending any SMS, let alone knowing what this number is!

It's called a 'Silent SMS' which is sent to the Apple Server in order to enable FaceTime and iMessage. This SMS is only meant to be sent once for each app (once for FaceTime and once for iMessage). Its purpose is to deactivate any charges, if you do incur any fees, it will be due to your mobile provider's policies.
