Fraudsters at play, it seems! I received a text purporting to be from the fraud team of either Smile Bank or the Co-operative Bank. However, I find it rather suspicious that they’d be reaching out to me via a mobile number, don’t you think? The message was eerily identical to what someone else mentioned earlier. It stated that my account ending in xxxx (which is spot on) had encountered a payment rejection, and then it insisted I respond with either a YES or a NO. Quite dodgy, if you ask me!

Looks like some scammers pretending to be from Co-op bank’s fraud team. I’ve never even had an account with them. Plus, why would a bank’s fraud department ring me from a mobile number? They sent me a text saying my account ending in xxxx (which is right) had a payment blocked and asked me to reply YES or NO.

I got in touch with the Co-operative Bank via their website and they said this was legit contact from their fraud prevention team. I’d defo check anything like this directly on the bank’s website instead of calling back on the phone. I believe the Co-op also cover Britannia Building Society and Smile, so maybe they all use the same phone number?

TOTAL CON - I reckon some of these good reviews are made by the scammers themselves. Got a text claiming to be from coop bank about my card being declined for a Tesco delivery I was waiting for. I replied ‘yes’ thinking it was legit. Soon after, got an email ‘from Tesco’ saying I could pay with a different card if I rang a certain number. Then I saw the email address looked a bit off compared to the usual Tesco one, so I didn’t do anything. Later got an automated message from Tesco confirming my delivery like normal. Those positive reviews? Probably fakes by the scammers.

Yep, it really was the Co-Operative Bank. They had two payments processed to the same insurance firm, so the second one got declined. I rang them on the official Co-Op numbers and they confirmed it was legit. They transferred me to their fraud team, and while I was on hold with them, we managed to sort out the declined payment. Then I phoned the insurance company again, and they accepted the payment for real this time, all while I was still on the line.

She rang the bank directly (not back to that number) and it turned out there were actually some dodgy transactions on her card. It was actually a legit call from the CO-OP bank, but I spent ages on hold and had to go through loads of menu choices before I got to talk to someone real. They said someone tried to use my credit card without permission.

This number genuinely belongs to the fraud team at Smile Bank / The Co-Operative Bank, but I wouldn’t dream of responding to messages like that - it’s shocking that a big bank sends texts from a random mobile number that’s not publicly listed. I rang my bank using the official Customer Services line, and they confirmed the text was genuine. (Funny enough, the hold music warned about scams - quite ironic!)
