Loads of folks reckon it’s a genuine number since scammers are reusing actual BG numbers????!! This method is well known nowadays, so don’t fall for it! British Gas wouldn’t just TEXT you without any other contact. The messages have loads of mistakes and don’t add up. So someone's messaged me pretending to be my daughter, telling the usual story about losing her phone and now using a different number. They say she can't pay a bill that's due because of it. Just got a message from 07378905633 saying there was an issue with my Smart Meter and they asked for the last part of my postcode (they already had the first three digits) to arrange an engineer visit to check the meter. I gave it to them since I'd received loads of texts asking for meter readings before and thought this was legit. I've blocked the number now.

This morning I spoke with my electricity company regarding issues with the smart meter and its role in sending gas readings to BG. Not long after, I got a message saying it was from BG. It said there was a problem with the meter readings and advised me to arrange for an engineer to come out... It immediately seemed dodgy, especially as it arrived so soon after I’d been dealing with the electricity provider. The number it came from looked a lot like a BG number, but the message didn’t actually say it was from BG.

I was sooo close to getting duped by this scam! These scammers are relentless, honestly they should be put on trial and exposed on TV for what they do! What has the world come to these days?? I arranged a slot to have my smart meter installed and got a confirmation from this number with the date and time. Took the day off work for it and no-one showed up. I’m now in the middle of making a formal complaint. They also sent me a text saying that if they had to cancel, they’d give 24 hours notice plus £50 in vouchers. Never heard a thing, no vouchers, and a whole day of my holiday wasted. British Gas? More like Utter Gas. Such an overpaid, pointless lot wasting everyone’s time.

Not sure why there’s so much bad stuff said about smart meters, I’m actually looking forward to getting a smart gas meter installed. I’ve had an electric one for yonks and it’s never caused any trouble. Since we’re on prepaid meters, it’s wicked easy to top up online, so it’ll be brill to do that with gas too. Like some folks have mentioned, the texts from British Gas about scheduling a smart meter install come even if you didnt ask for it. The number itself seems legit, but they do come across a bit forceful. Best thing is to just go on your British Gas online account and sort out cancelling the booking yourself.

They assured me it was the real deal, which put my mind at ease. I then requested to cancel the appointment because I’m not interested in having one fitted. Fortunately, there were no problems with the cancellation, and they promised they wouldn’t arrange another appointment without consulting me first. Time will tell if they stick to that!

No, it’s not British Gas sending those links with underlined text, they usually give you choices. I had my gas meter checked and signed for before. Prepaid meters don’t work properly with smart meter keys. Plenty of places aren’t great for smart meters, especially if you’re renting. You wouldn’t get texts from them like that, same goes for water companies. Just ignore or block the message, smart meters aren’t compulsory and the tech has moved on - many of the old ones are now outdated anyway.

I’ve just had a run-in with the number 07378905633, and let me tell you, it’s definitely not affiliated with British Gas. Just a heads up-don’t click on any underlined links from them! It’s not even necessary to do that, especially if you’re renting, since your landlord might simply forward anything that arrives. Genuine communications from utilities like British Gas or the water company come through the post, not dodgy texts. I’ve had a gas engineer look at this, and it’s simply false. Those smart meters? They don’t sync properly with the prepaid options that require keys! They rely on swipe cards and won’t function without a signal either. In fact, I reckon prepaid plans are much more reliable. There’s a serious epidemic of scams every year, and this is just one more of the same.

Yep, definitely British Gas being pushy about fitting a meter. I logged into my online account with them and saw the appointment was there. I could either reschedule or cancel - I chose to cancel, once again.
