I received an email regarding a car we're listing on Auto Trader, and it had the exact wording as mentioned here. When I rang them back, an African gentleman answered the phone. He started probing for our name and address to send a cheque but showed no interest in actually seeing the vehicle. It all felt rather suspicious, to be honest. I mean, who in their right mind would shell out £1,000 for a motor without so much as asking a single question at the outset? Quite peculiar, if you ask me!

We answered the call and were informed that the charge is 47 pence a minute. Shortly afterwards, we received an email asserting that they aren't in the business of selling anything and that the checks would surely fail. This was all conveyed over the phone, and they didn't suggest any further verification. At the moment, there are absolutely no connections to him.

I’ve just received the same email as well. I've made it clear that I won’t engage with them unless she gets a proper look at the car beforehand. But let’s be honest, that’s not very likely to happen, is it?

Greetings! We received the same email right after posting on loot, and it appears to be a scam-best not to respond. This is likely a fraudulent scheme coming from an individual based in Africa. There's a strong chance either that cheque won't hold up, or it could be a fake one that might initially clear only for your bank to claw back the funds later. Just take a good look at the phrasing. They're fishing for details that they’ve probably spotted in your ad. Steer clear of this!

Received a strikingly similar email shortly after I placed an advert on Loot. It felt rather peculiar as it seemed to be requesting information that I had already provided. Thankfully, we chose not to reply, but I made sure to investigate this further first!

We did get back in touch and gave them a ring. It cost us 47p per minute! Shortly after, we shot over an email clarifying that we aren't in the business of selling anything, and any cheques received would simply be destroyed. During the call, we made it clear that we weren’t accepting cheques for sales. Now, however, it seems we've lost all means of contacting him.
