This was a total rip-off and clearly a scam. The person on the phone claimed to be from HSBC.

They told me their number looked a bit different because of some extension or something. It was really close to HSBC’s genuine number though, so don’t be fooled.

They had my address and the last four digits of my card, then mentioned some payments supposedly made to Carphone Warehouse and BMW in Liverpool totalling a few hundred quid. After that, they asked me for some personal banking details. I wasn’t sure which numbers they wanted and they kept pushing. It all felt very suspicious, so I told them I’d hang up and ring HSBC’s official helpline instead. They kept trying to stop me but I ended the call.
I later rang HSBC and they confirmed it was definitely a scam.

Total rip-off and a proper scam. Someone rang me pretending to be from HSBC. They said their phone number looked a bit different ‘cause they were calling from an extension. Just got a call from someone claiming to be from HSBC’s fraud team, but it’s definitely a con. Watch out, don’t trust these calls!

Got two calls from them just today and they kept mucking up my name, couldn’t say it right at all. The bloke sounding from the other end had a proper thick Yorkshire accent. Whatever you do, don’t share your security passcodes on the phone! Be extra careful, these con artists are fishing for your info through a fake post office scam sent by text. They try to get you to pay £1.99 for a “royal mail parcel delivery”, but that’s just a trick to steal your info and then ring you to get into your account. Avoid clicking any links in those texts ’cause royal mail never asks for personal details that way. Stay safe out there!

Beware, 03459404404 is a fake number pretending to be HSBC. The number is almost the same as the real HSBC number, just one digit off. They try to trick you by saying there are two direct debits set up on your account - one for BMW group and another for PC World. When I told them I didn’t recognise these payments, they asked me to share my HSBC app’s secure key passcode. Don’t ever give them that info, HSBC would never ask for it. They’re quite sneaky and keep you on the phone ages. They claim to protect your account and warn you not to trust others, but they’re the ones doing the scamming. Such a deceptive way to gain your confidence. If you’re unsure about a call, always ring HSBC directly yourself.
