What a complete and utter con! The caller was pretending to be from HSBC.

They mentioned that the number they were using was slightly altered due to their calling extension. Their digits were alarmingly close to the genuine HSBC number, but do take heed, it’s a trap!

They had my address and even the last four figures of my bank card. They claimed there were several hundred quid worth of transactions from Carphone Warehouse and BMW in Liverpool, then pressed me for some personal banking details. When I didn’t provide the specific details they wanted, their persistence raised my suspicions. I eventually told them I’d hang up and ring back using HSBC’s official number, to which they fervently insisted I shouldn’t. I hung up instead.
I later reached out to HSBC and they confirmed it was indeed a scam. Stay safe, everyone!

Absolutely a scam and completely dodgy! The caller was masquerading as someone from HSBC. They claimed that their number was slightly altered due to the extension they were ringing from. Their number bore a striking resemblance to HSBC’s genuine contact number-don’t be fooled by that! They had my address and even the last four digits of my debit card. They went on about unusual transactions amounting to a few hundred quid from Carphone Warehouse and BMW in Liverpool, and then they started pressing me for some personal banking details. When I didn't have the specific numbers they requested, they kept pushing for them. Things began to feel really fishy, so I told them I was going to hang up and ring HSBC directly. They urged me not to do that. In the end, I hung up anyway. I reached out to HSBC, and they verified it was indeed a scam.

I received a couple of calls today where the bloke on the other end struggled to pronounce my name. He had a thick Yorkshire accent, which didn't help matters! Whatever you do, don't divulge your security codes over the phone! It’s crucial to stay alert because these scammers have ways of acquiring your information through dodgy text messages that look like they’re from the post office. They’ll claim you owe £1.99 for a Royal Mail parcel. That’s when they’ll capture your details and try to ring you up to gain access to your account. Just a heads up-don’t click on the link in the text, as Royal Mail would never request your personal information in that manner. Stay safe!

Be wary of the number 03459404404 claiming to be from HSBC - it’s a scam! This so-called number has one digit off from the legitimate HSBC contact, which should raise red flags immediately. They’ll try to hoodwink you into believing that there are two direct debits - one for BMW and another for PC World. When I stated I didn’t recognise those transactions, they asked for my secure key passcode from the HSBC app. This is a major red flag because HSBC would never request such sensitive information over the phone. They like to think they’re clever, and will keep you on the line for ages, all while presenting a façade of protecting your account. In reality, they’re the ones engaging in deceitful tactics. It’s a despicable method to gain your trust. If something feels amiss, hang up and reach out to HSBC directly!
