Hey everyone, I recently got a letter claiming to be from HMRC with the number 03453021429 on it. I ended up giving them my bank details, but now I’m not sure if it’s legit or a scam. Can someone please tell me if this number is genuine? Also, what steps should I take now? Thanks in advance!

Today I got a letter that looked like it was from HMRC, claiming I had overpaid tax credits and needed to pay up. I’ve seen letters like this before, so I was suspicious. I rang the payments helpline to sort it out, but surprise, surprise - it was that same number loads of people have flagged as a scam. Just a heads up - always double-check any number before calling, especially if they’re asking for money or personal info!

Reading these comments is confusing, loads of people say they got calls from HMRC asking for their NI number. Thing is, I don’t claim any benefits or tax credits like some others mentioned in their posts.

From what I’ve found, this number really does belong to HMRC in Glasgow. You can check it out yourself on their official site here: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/tax-credits-payment. Seems pretty genuine to me!

Yesterday I got a letter saying I owe £166.78, but HMRC doesn't operate in Glasgow, does it? Then there was another letter from some suspicious company called LCS in Leeds claiming I need to pay back £1885.18 for an overpayment! Check out their website if you want to see what I mean: www.lcsdr.com
