Not long ago I got an email that seemed to be from Talk Talk saying I owed money and my service would be cut off if I didn't settle it. It looked pretty legit at first, but I had a quick look at my bank transactions and then rang Talk Talk themselves, and turns out my account was fine and paid in full. Definitely a scam, watch out for this one!

On the 28th of January 2025, I ended my broadband contract with TalkTalk. Shortly after, I got an email titled 'REMINDER Outstanding balance of £36.84' claiming to be from TalkTalk. The provided phone number for support was 0345 172 0029. Although the sender's name and email looked legit, the account number listed in the email didn’t match my actual TalkTalk account at all.

I got a call about some letter from TalkTalk, but it was a total scam. They had me on the phone for ages, like over an hour, and kept putting me on hold saying they were looking into an issue with TalkTalk. They even passed me around to four separate folks. None of them ever said they weren’t scammers. Honestly, I feel daft for calling back in the first place.

I ended my TalkTalk contract back in May 2021 and got a refund confirmation by post around September that year. I’d already stopped the Direct Debit payments. Even though I’d physically destroyed the SIM, they wouldn’t cancel the phone service properly. Then, out of the blue in March 2022, I got a final demand threatening legal action for services I hadn’t used. The letter looked genuine, complete with the TalkTalk logo and official address, but this telephone number on the letter wasn’t on any other correspondence from TalkTalk. Quite confusing!

Somebody rang claiming to be from BT OpenReach, saying there was an issue with my phone line. But I hadn’t reported anything, and everything’s been working fine as far as I know. He asked if he could link a BT server to my laptop to run some checks. I thought that sounded risky, so I asked for his number to ring him back. He said he got why I was worried but insisted that was the only way to find the problem.

Got a text today supposedly from "TalkTalk" saying my payment was overdue and asking me to ring 03451720029 to sort it out or my service would be cut off. I’ve never had anything with TalkTalk, so I phoned the number. The woman who answered had a Nigerian accent and said she couldn’t find my account just from my number but wanted me to give her my full name, postcode and other details “for verification”. I ended the call straight away. Definitely a scam.

At around 10:40 this morning, I got a call from 03451720029. The bloke on the line sounded Asian and said he was from TalkTalk. He claimed there was a problem with my direct debit payment not going through and even knew exactly how much I supposedly owed. He seemed quite nice, but didn’t really pick up on the recent issues I've had with TalkTalk. Although he kept saying he understood, when I asked what exactly, he couldn’t explain. His aim was to get me to pay straight away using my bank card, but I told him I don’t do phone payments anymore. After making me wait on hold for a few minutes, he told me to ring that same number back. So, I ended up checking online and, unsurprisingly, it’s a scam.

Today, I got a message on what looked like my account page saying I owed money, which isn't true because everything’s paid through direct debit already. It asked me to follow a link to make a ‘secure’ card payment or ring their so-called customer payment support team at 0345 172 0029. I ignored the prompts and instead looked up that phone number, and it seems to be dodgy. Now, I’m stuck trying to figure out how to get rid of this bogus alert from my screen.

Got a letter saying I owe £323.48 and they want it paid within a week or they’ll send debt collectors after me, plus put a default notice on my record that’d mess up any future credit deals. I haven’t borrowed a bean off them! When I rang up, all I got was some bloke from who knows where who couldn’t make head nor tail of what I was saying. What a load of muppets!
