Whenever an 0333 shows up on my caller ID, I crack out a thick Indian accent to try and scare off any con artists. You could tell the guy was trying not to laugh. She then asked me to confirm my address, but when I asked which address she wanted, she wouldn’t say. I was told to send back any letters I get, but she wouldn’t give a proper return address, just said ‘return to sender’ - seemed really dodgy to me.

Be careful with cold callers. Sometimes they might be legit, but often they’re just after whatever cash we’ve got left. If you owe money, it’s best to get in touch directly with the company you owe, and arrange payments - definitely don’t deal with these strangers. That idea that debts vanish after a few years isn’t always true. If you don’t owe anything, make sure you’re not a victim of identity theft. Also, if you’ve got a new phone number, double-check it wasn’t used before by someone in debt.

Lowells are a pain, not sure if it’s proper scam but they’re bloody annoying and sneaky - they ring from loads of different numbers and just keep going. They even had the cheek to call me on Christmas Eve. My way of dealing with these lot is to simply never respond at all. You don’t have to reply to them legally. Just block ’em and don’t bother, but if you stick to my rule of never picking up for unknown numbers, it saves a lot of hassle. If you do answer, just tell them they’ve got the wrong number and hang up.
