I'm pretty sure that call was from British Gas. I recently began moving my energy supply from British Gas over to ScottishPower. Before that, I was with Rebel Energy, but they collapsed and OFGEM brought British Gas in to manage things. So I think the call was from BG’s customer support, probably trying to persuade me to stick with them. However, I've noticed ScottishPower's pricing is better for my usage, especially since they offer half-price electricity and gas on weekends between 11am and 4pm, whereas British Gas just let you have that deal on Sundays.

Totally a scam, he had my name and claimed I was cancelling my British Gas account, which isn’t true at all! He only had part of my postcode though, so I just hung up. He rang back immediately but then blocked me. This is definitely dodgy, so steer well clear! Upon my verification of my identity, he abruptly disconnected the call. The general consensus in the comments is that he's some sort of scam artist. I recently changed my energy supplier from British Gas to Octopus, so from the comments, I thought it might be a 'stay with us' kind of call. Turns out, it wasn’t! British Gas assigned me about a year ago, then removed me from the Priority Services Register and increased my direct debit payments twice. Eventually, I stopped the direct debit and just paid each bill as it came since it worked out cheaper on my limited income.

Really grateful for sites like this that help folks avoid annoying or dodgy calls... Like many others, I’ve been reporting and am actually looking to change providers. Since I already have a smart meter with EON, I figured I’d get both my gas and electric through them, and maybe get a smart gas meter fitted too.
