I was browsing Martin Lewis’s site to check out cheaper deals for electricity and gas. I got a call from this bloke with a Welsh accent, claiming he had a cracking offer, even though I’d already told him British Gas, who I’m with, only differ by about £4 a month. He went on about a £150 saving because of some government pricing thing, which sounded totally made up. Then he switched to my mobile contract, saying it’d be a quid cheaper monthly, and tried to tack on broadband for the same price. I said I needed to chat with my son, as my husband died recently, and he said I could sign up now and cancel later if my son wasn’t happy. I’ve since blocked the number but I’m a bit nervous this might happen again.

I’ve been getting nonstop calls from this number ever since I checked energy deals on some site. The first time I picked up, I told them I wasn’t interested. I told them they’d got the wrong person. They then said something like ‘must be the wrong name then,’ but I made it clear I wasn’t interested.

Coppers do look into these things but they’re seriously stretched thin. The trouble is hardly anyone reports scams; probably less than 0.1% of all tries and only a tiny sliver of those actually successful. So the police haven’t got a true picture of how bad this scam problem really is. Scammers take advantage since it’s so simple to get away with it. Honestly, most of us Brits don’t bother flagging these attempts even though it’s straightforward to do so.
