4 yearsGot a call from someone claiming they were handling my life insurance and could lower my premiums since I supposedly had it for a couple of years. I actually only took it out 6 months ago, so I ended the call pretty quick, thinking it was a scam!4 yearsSomebody called claiming to be from Alliance and said they’re linked to my insurance. I just ended the call straight away.Alliance5 yearsI got a call from a woman speaking with a foreign accent. I didn’t recognise the number or the voice, so I just ended the call.5 yearsGot a call from a number I didn’t recognise, but I wouldn’t bother calling back - smells a bit scammy to me.5 yearsHad a call earlier today from someone saying they were with o2, offering a discount of about 40-50% on my contract 'cause of Covid or something. They sent me a 'promo code' and told me to just ignore the security warning. But that warning said no legit o2 staff would ever send a code like that. I ended the call and phoned 202 to report it. They said these scams are pretty common and happen on loads of networks. Looks like they're trying to hack your password and take over your account.Covid5 yearsWATCH OUT, THIS IS A SCAM! Today I got a call from the number 03330112773. A woman named Ria spoke to me, and she didn’t sound like English was her first language (which felt a bit suspicious). Apparently, she was from O2 and had my number from some “exclusive” list. She offered me a crazy deal because of COVID-19, with a 40% discount on switching to O2. The offer sounded completely unbelievable: unlimited data, texts, calls, 1000 international minutes AND a brand new phone of my choice, all for £18 a month. I’d pay a £30 upfront fee that they said I’d get back once my phone and contract arrived. But honestly, nothing would ever turn up and the refund would never happen! To seem legit, she even sent me a fake text with a security code pretending to be from O2. But it was just a clone, nothing real at all. When I told her I needed time to think and would call back, she insisted she would ring me instead. I kept refusing and said I’d contact her. Then she said I could ONLY call her on that 03330112773 number, claiming she worked in O2’s “Upgrade Department” at their Slough HQ and that I must not ring O2 customer service. Hmmmmm…… Yeah right, Ria! So I phoned O2 customer service directly. A lovely woman there told me that number doesn’t belong to them and it isn’t even based in the UK - could be anywhere worldwide. She explained the accent might be a clue; scammers outside the UK often won’t sound fully British, unlike local ones who choose UK numbers to sound more trustworthy. I also learned that many scammers get phone numbers from Carphone Warehouse. I buy my Vodafone deals through them, so it’s disappointing if they’ve handed my details to these fraudsters. The O2 rep explained they never call customers on rival networks with offers like this, don’t send random texts with codes, and that “Upgrade Department” calls only happen for existing O2 customers wanting to upgrade. Plus, they would never tell you not to call the official Customer Services number ending in “..02”. I tried ringing Ria back to have a word but it just went straight to voicemail - classic scam sign! So I left a cheeky message, haha. Be careful out there, people. Don’t get caught. Stay sharp, stay safe, and fingers crossed for a negative COVID test!
