I got a call on my mobile from 0330 808 5258, someone asking if I’d received my tax refund cheque. I never got a cheque because it was a direct payment. They claimed I had to pay them 40% of the refund, and the rest was supposedly mine. But the refund was just for me paying too much tax in 2021-2022, so why would I have to give anyone any of it? I told them I was driving and would ring back later.

Seemed dodgy because they kept ringing so much, but they’re actually a legit company, so no worries there.

Sounds like this is probably Uclaimforme, like a few journos have pointed out. They helped me recover mis-sold PPI and now they're after the tax that was taken off. Honestly, if I ever manage to pick up their call, I'll just let them know I've sorted that bit on my own. Getting a tax refund back is pretty simple - just fill out a basic form on Gov.uk. It's a bit of a nuisance, true, and I get why some folks might find it borderline pestering. But no, it's definitely not a scam or any dodgy spam.
