The last digits XXXX matched my actual British Gas account number. Instead of phoning that number, I called British Gas directly.
Turns out, that number isn’t a genuine British Gas contact. While I was still on the line with British Gas, they actually rang that suspicious number themselves and it connected through to British Gas. So basically, if you call that number first, you get charged, and that money goes straight to scammers. British Gas told me they’re taking steps to fix this, but I’m sharing here to warn others. Legitimate British Gas numbers always start with 0800 or 0845.
