Now, I must point out, XXXX were indeed the final digits of my British Gas account. However, instead of dialling the suspicious number, I opted to contact British Gas directly.
Interestingly, while I was on hold, they rang me from that very number. It appears this number is not affiliated with British Gas at all. The trick here is that by calling it, you could end up incurring charges that benefit these fraudsters. British Gas is looking into this matter, but I thought it prudent to share my experience to spare others from falling victim to this scam. Remember, all legitimate British Gas contact numbers commence with 0800 or 0845. Stay vigilant!
