I got a call around 1:30 in the afternoon on 30th September 2023 from someone saying they were with OVO Energy about installing an automated meter. When I asked what type of meter it was, they just wouldn’t say. They asked if I was the one on the account, which I confirmed. Then they kept trying to get my name and address but I told them again, before we go any further, I need to know which meter this is about. After that, they just cut the call. Definitely sounded like a scam to me.

At first, it seemed fine, but then she started asking more detailed questions, and next thing you know, she wanted to talk about how I pay my bills. She said she’d tell me the meter’s serial numbers, but after a little wait, she suddenly said she couldn’t get those and offered to share something else instead. I wasn’t convinced at all, so I just told her no and ended the call.

It appears that SMS plc is contracted by energy companies to install these meters. Given that I have an appointment scheduled with Ovo, it seems legitimate to me. Nonetheless, I've chosen to hold off and wait for them to give me a ring back within the ten-day timeframe mentioned in the text.

I received a text about postponing my OVO engineer appointment. So, I dialled the number, provided my name and address, but then I was left hanging on the line. It went all quiet and crackly for what felt like ages, so in the end, I decided to hang up.
