I got a call from some dodgy lot saying if I didn’t press 1 I’d be arrested for taxes. I blocked the number, but they keep ringing from different 0300 numbers every day. How do these muppets get hold of so many phone numbers? Absolute scams.

Got a call from 0300 200 3553, same old robot voice claiming to be HMRC. Total scam, the recording was exactly the same. Don’t fall for it!

At the moment, the London Met Police are handling these issues. If you get calls from this number or any other odd ones, make sure to report them straight away. It’s best to let the police know so they can take action.

So, I decided to try something different with those HMRC scam calls. I looked up the official HMRC phone number online and gave them a ring. The moment someone picked up, I shouted out "Fraudsters, Fraudsters!" loud and clear. Honestly, it was so satisfying, proper good fun actually. Now, I think my number’s been blocked because I got a warning that the police might come knocking. Bit scary but, honestly, it feels good to stand up to those scammers nagging folks for cash. Hopefully, they get the message now.

Loads of times this number or similar ones have rung me. I reckon the trick is if you press one, it connects you to a pricey premium number - sometimes costing more than twelve quid a minute! I usually just ignore any unknown calls because if it’s really urgent, they’ll leave a voicemail, right?
8 years
Just so everyone knows, HMRC, the fraud squad or police aren't going to ring you up to warn about anything or offer you a discount if you pay up quickly. Usually, if there's any kind of tax issue, it starts with a formal letter from the tax folks asking you to sort out some issues. If you were genuinely in trouble for serious tax dodging, you’d probably get a knock on the door from them or the police, not a phone call. So, don’t fall for those calls claiming to be from them!

I got a call from 03002003539 claiming to be from HMRC. I pressed 1 like they asked, and some guy told me I’d been caught committing fraud and that there was an arrest warrant out for me. He even asked if I had a criminal lawyer, which really scared me. Then he wanted to know who did my taxes. I told him I’m disabled and not working, and he just hung up straight away. When I tried to ring back the number, it was already disconnected! I’m disabled myself with physical and mental health issues like PTSD, depression and severe anxiety, and now I’m shaking and unsure what to do next.

Just got a call saying I'm about to be arrested or something, can't believe it!

I reckon their game is to leave you hanging for a while, making you anxious and stressed. Then they ring you up again, hoping you’ll be so desperate to stop the hassle that you just hand over cash. The worst part is, some folks actually get caught up in it, especially older people. At the end of the day, it’s a total scam. Loads of reports mention calls from numbers like these, asking for bank payments to avoid fake legal trouble or arrest papers.

Missed a call just now and there’s no voicemail left, which makes me pretty wary these days.

Cheers for clearing that up for me. I get now why as soon as i told him i was disabled and not working, he just cut me off and blocked my number. Honestly, it’s ruined my entire day. I was left shaking and stressed for ages, thinking i might get arrested, until i stumbled across this website. Really, much sympathy to anyone who’s been scammed out of their cash by those lot.

I might sound daft here, but can anyone tell me what the actual scam is? Like, what do these people gain by making those calls? I just can’t figure out what’s in it for them. I was shaken up when they said there was a warrant out for me, asked if I had a lawyer, then just hung up and blocked my number so I couldn’t ring back! They didn’t ask me for any money or bank info or nothing. So seriously, what’s the point of it all? What are they after?

Got a call from someone claiming to be HMRC, sounded fishy so I just blocked the number instantly.

The best thing to do if you get a call from HMRC about fraud is to just hang up and block the caller. Don’t answer any questions or press any options they might ask you to. If there was any serious trouble, like an arrest, the police wouldn't ring you beforehand; they'd come straight to your house with officers. So don’t get drawn in by these calls.

Got a call from someone claiming to be with HMRE, saying there’s a tax fraud case against me. They told me to press 1 or I’d be "arrested soon". Such a load of rubbish. I didn’t hang about and blocked the number right away.

I might be a bit clueless here, but can anyone explain what the point of these phone scams is? Like, what do they actually gain by ringing you up like that? Honestly, it freaked me out big time when someone said there was a warrant out for me and asked if I had a lawyer, then just hung up and blocked my number so I couldn’t even call back! They didn’t ask for any money or bank info, nothing. So what’s the catch? How do these scammers benefit from this kind of call?
