7 years
I received a call from someone claiming to be with HMRC, insisting that there was an ongoing tax fraud investigation linked to my name. He provided me with what he said was his name, an identification number, and a case reference. According to him, I supposedly owed £1800 to HMRC and was accused of trying to dodge tax payments. He mentioned that they had sent me a letter, but I wasn’t home to sign for it. He offered two options: either I pay an inflated sum of £2011 immediately, or face the prospect of going to court, where an unsuccessful outcome could result in a hefty penalty of £25,000. Initially, I was taken aback and my mind went blank. Nonetheless, I am fully up to date with my tax obligations. A quick search of his number revealed it was a scam, prompting me to hang up. But the persistence of this so-called HMRC officer was astonishing, as he continued to ring from various numbers, even threatening to involve the police for my arrest. I informed him that I would be contacting the authorities instead, which is exactly what I am in the process of doing now!
