I tried ringing Ipswich Magistrates Court using the number 01473 217261, but it automatically connected me to their fines section. On my Android, the call showed up as "Speeding Law Solicitors". The place I got through to didn’t really assist with what I was asking about though, so I guess I might have dialled the wrong number for my issue. Doesn’t seem like a scam or anything dodgy, just wasn’t much help in the end. Bit annoying really.

Got a letter claiming I owe a fine but didn't say why. Supposedly it was from a Derby court, but when I checked the address on the letter against the real court’s address, they didn’t match. I got a call from them too, so I rang back one of the numbers. It turned out to be a speeding law solicitor’s office, which normally only covers driving stuff (and I don’t drive). The person I spoke to said it was about not having a TV licence. When I told her I’ve been paying for one for over 20 years she got really rude, so I ended the call pretty quickly.

This number came up when a letter arrived at my mother in law’s place addressed to a made up name, claiming it was a fine for littering. The letter said it was from Barkingside magistrates court. We’d already got letters in this fake name from Having council about some vague offences and threats about bailiffs and fines. Honestly, I reckon it’s just another scam trying to catch people out.

Loads of rubbish calls.

No need to be concerned @MelizandMakra, this is clearly a scam. They’ve been pulling the same trick for years now. If you get any messages with links or phone numbers asking for payment, just ignore them and definitely don’t ring or click anything.

I got a letter like this too about owing some money. I’m from Nottingham but I’m planning to take it up with the courts in Derby to get it properly sorted. Definitely going to push it further.

Got a letter today but no clue what it’s about, nothing explained at all.

Got my second letter now, in just 10 weeks, and the amount is different this time. I ignored the first one, no point really. Looks like they gave up on the first since nothing came of it.

Just checked this number and saw it’s a scam, really wish they’d stop bothering folks.

Got a text saying it was from HM Courts & Tribunals Service about a fine being overdue, but I don’t even live in Wales. Seems dodgy to me.

This isn’t a scam, it’s actually a government debt recovery team. They do have a proper name, but if you don’t call them back to confirm your info they’ll just keep pushing you with threats. I rang them up and they asked if I lived at a particular address. After checking, they admitted they’d got the wrong person. No sorry or anything. Honestly feels like harassment. I’d suggest people contact their MP about this. It’s not how a government in a decent country should act.

It’d be great if NC&ESHD could answer these queries so we’re all a bit more relaxed about this!

Hi all, I got this letter from HMCTS historic debt team dated 7th October 2017 and it seems a bit off. I remember one of the offences alright, but the other one about not wearing a seatbelt is totally rubbish. As far as I'm aware, I've never been slapped with a penalty on my licence for that. When I called the number on the letter, 0300 123 9 252, it only operates between 9am and 5pm with a lunch break in the middle, which seems a bit odd. I'm planning to report this as suspicious to the police. The other offence did have points on my licence and I paid it within the 28-day window you're allowed. Honestly, this letter looks convincing but something's not right.

Totally a scam. The letter doesnt say why you have to pay anything. The date they mention is always from ages ago. And they only want you to pay using the number they provide. They probably think we’ll be scared and since the amount isnt big, we’ll just pay up to avoid hassle. Don’t fall for it.

However, about ten days later, I found myself staring at yet another letter, this time advising me that HMRC would escalate matters since I hadn’t responded to their initial communication. Feeling the need to investigate further, I called the number listed on the recent letter. A helpful lady informed me that the fine pertained to an unpaid tram ticket from 2011, and that they had sent previous notifications to an old address of mine-an address she conveniently had on file. Even with this information, I was still a bit sceptical. A quick search online revealed that the phone number linked to the letter connected me directly to the official Gov.UK website for outstanding fines, which reassured me of its legitimacy, especially since I have previously worked for a government agency. To cut a long story short, this isn't a scam; it just seems to have been executed rather poorly. I'd definitely recommend against ignoring such letters. I was advised to reach out to my local magistrates’ court to file a statutory declaration, which would allow me the chance to appeal or contest the fine in question. As it stands, I didn't even know about this fine and I'm challenging it, especially since the court costs tiptoe around £300 for what I believe should only be a £20 fine if it turns out to be valid. Just got a letter demanding I settle a fine from 2010, and the phone number is printed everywhere on it. Tried checking the number but couldn’t get anything solid. When I called the genuine payment line for HM Courts & Tribunals Service, they asked for a division number that wasn’t anywhere on the letter. I’ve been told to only pay through the official line to avoid getting scammed since they’re the only authorised payment point.

I got a call from this number saying they were from Her Majesty’s Court Service about some old debt. Seemed a bit fishy to me. Anyone know if it’s legit? Also, wondering about the email [email protected], does it have anything to do with this?
