Someone rang my client from 03000 575 545 saying they were Mr Chapple, working for HMRC Debt Collection, demanding £998.98 for some PAYE supposedly unpaid in 2013-2014. They gave a contact number too, 03000 553 190. Luckily, my client didn’t say anything and just got me involved straight away. Reading the earlier comments on this site has really helped me avoid wasting time going through accounts, cheers for that!

Both directors of our firm got a call supposedly from HMRC, insisting we call back immediately. Foolishly, I called straight away and ended up sharing way too much info before getting suspicious and cutting the call off. They phoned again and mentioned sending a letter. Oddly, they asked for our address - something they should already have. Definitely a scam, just not sure what their angle is yet.

Someone rang me pretending to be from HMRC, saying I had PAYE outstanding for more than 16 months. When I told them I wasn’t aware of any such debt and mentioned I’d check the official HMRC site, they stayed polite. I haven’t bothered looking it up yet, but this felt like it could’ve been a scam call.

Had a phone call from a woman claiming to be from HMRC about my self assessment. She left a message, saying I had to ring back before 5pm the following day. Thing is, I’m certain HMRC don’t have my mobile number! Plus, she never mentioned my name. She did mention a reference number though. When I called back, they asked for loads of personal info - my name, address, date of birth - before they’d discuss anything. I wasn’t having any of it and just ended the call. It sounded quite convincing at first, but I’m sure they would’ve eventually tried to get my bank details. I’m confident my tax stuff is all up-to-date, so didn’t fall for it.

Got a call from a bloke speaking with a British accent, said he was calling from the Inland Revenue. He wanted to chat to someone who doesn’t live at our place anymore. He mentioned he’d take that person’s name off their books. After that, he didn’t really say much else. I ended the call and looked up the number afterwards.
