Got a call from someone claiming to be from HMRC. When I rang back, they refused to say which department they represented or explain why they wanted my info, then just ended the call! Classic scammer behaviour.

My wife got a robocall from someone pretending to be from HMRC, saying she’d be arrested for some missing tax payment. They wanted her to cough up £700 straightaway to avoid the police turning up in an hour. It’s obviously one of those common scams going around, so I told her to just block the number and not answer anymore. Total rubbish!

Got a robo call telling me to ring HMRC back, so I blocked my caller ID and called them up. I told whoever answered that I’d checked with the official HMRC office in London and my tax stuff is all sorted. Then I told them this wasn’t really HMRC calling, and they hung up right away. Totally a scam, no doubt. I reckon everyone should try what I did, but make sure to hide your number. They’ll probably get tired of it and stop picking up eventually.

At about 8.15 in the morning I was still in bed when my phone buzzed, but I just ignored it. From what I’ve read from others, it looks like HMRC calling again.

I picked up what turned out to be an automated voice, so I just ended the call and rang back using another phone. Some clueless bloke from the US answered and asked what number I’d been dialled on. I told him it was their number, so they should know. He then said he calls loads of folks daily and accused me of not paying my taxes! I cut him off immediately, called him a dodgy con artist, and told him I’d just got a tax refund, so clearly I was up to date with my payments. Then I hung up on him.
