I rang back and got through to a bloke called Givasha Urmony, seemed alright but I’m rubbish at hearing on phone calls. I ended up telling him info from four different credit cards, and when he still wasn’t catching it, I even had to share my passwords and bank info. All so he could say I supposedly owe some tax to HMRC!
THIS IS DEFINITELY A SCAM, don’t answer calls like this, never hand over your info or send them any cash otherwise you’ll lose your hard-earned money!
HMRC don’t need to bother leaving messages, they’ll take what they’re owed legally, so there’s no need to panic...

Today, I got a call from 02081238826 claiming I’m under tax investigation, then they just cut the line. I’m 60 and decided to check by ringing 1471, which showed the actual number as 02086388800! Proper dodgy if you ask me.

At 1.09pm today, the 17th of December, I received a call telling me I was under investigation for tax fraud and that I needed to ring them back right away. The call dropped straight away though, so I rang 1471 to catch the number. Instead of the usual option to press 3 to return the call, the line just went dead. Today’s been full of calls - mostly people sending birthday wishes since I turned 72. The thing that really got me was having to wheel myself across the room just to pick up the phone, because I’m in a wheelchair! Quite frustrating.

BEWARE OF THIS SCAM - never pick up, never press 1, and definitely dont ring them back. There’s no legal trouble if you just block and ignore these threatening calls. Scammers from India are posing as HMRC officials, trying to frighten you into paying bogus tax debts right away. They’re quite pushy and intimidating, using fear to trick people, especially the elderly, and sadly, many older folks have already fallen victim to this. Stay safe and don’t fall for it!
