I'm not too sure if this number actually belongs to Co-op Bank or if it's some kind of scam trying to mess with people?

Got a call from someone saying they were the Co-op bank fraud team. I didn’t pick up, but they left a voicemail with a callback number. I wasn’t sure if it was legit, so I called the bank myself. They told me it was the fraud department’s automated line, and they were checking because I’d just done a bigger payment than usual. I had to call that automated number back, as they wouldn’t let the money go through until I confirmed it was actually me who made the transfer. Definitely a big payment from my account!

Over the last few days, I’ve been getting automated calls supposedly from the Co-operative Bank. I thought they were dodgy spam calls, and I figured answering might cost me a bomb on some premium-rate scam. Then today, I received an email claiming to be from the Co-operative Bank, asking me to ring 02081035990. I looked up the number on the official Co-op Bank website, but nothing showed up. Plus, the email itself looked off: no security certificate proving it was from the actual bank, and it included suspicious links to sites I’d never heard of like proofpoint.com and azureedge.net. Still, I gave the number a call. Instead of a real person, I got an automated message that asked for my date of birth - a classic first step in a scam. Once they have that info, they come back another day claiming it proves they’re legit. If the email and phone number really are from the Co-op Bank, then honestly, their security must be terrible.

I got a few calls after paying a large bill. The first three I just cut off. But the fourth time, I decided to ring them back. They already had my details - my name and birthday, month and year - which I had to confirm by pressing 1. Then they mentioned the big payment I made and asked if it was legit, again asking me to press 1 to confirm. That was pretty much it, and then they thanked me and ended the call. Seems like it was the Coop fraud team doing their checks, so it felt quite genuine to me.

This number called me three times pretending to be from the Co-op bank, warning me about supposed fraud on my account and telling me to press 1. I just ended the call straight away. It happened right after I paid a fairly large bill, and they even got my name right. I then rang Co-op directly using their 159 fraud line, and they said there wasn't any suspicious activity on my account, nor had they tried to get in touch. They told me to just ignore the calls and keep an eye out. However, they couldn’t confirm if 02081035990 was genuinely their fraud team or not!

Phone numbers can easily be faked these days, so it’s hard to tell if a call really came from the Co-op or not. For me, it was definitely them - I rang the main Co-op number to double check and they confirmed it. I’d made some big payments and they were just verifying if they were legit. When I called back on 02081035990, they made me answer some questions to prove I was the right person, like confirming my birth year and month. They also already knew the amount I’d paid. Best advice is to check with your bank first, or you can call 02081035990 since it’s a genuine number. But if you got the original call from someone else, it might be a scam. Proper confusing!

Pretty sure this is Co-op Bank. I paid way more than I normally do via their app and then got a voicemail telling me to ring this number and punch in some details to confirm they were dealing with me. I got a call from Co-op bank, an automated one, that actually said my full name and job title, asking to verify a strange but true online transaction I made the previous evening. Using the multiple-choice prompts, I was able to confirm my birth month and year (thankfully no exact date, or I would have ended the call) and then confirm if the transaction was okay. They didn’t ask for anything else. Seems like a legit Co-op phone number to me.

I got a call from The Co-operative Bank’s automated anti-fraud team about checking a transaction I made online. I didn’t pick up at first and let it go to voicemail since I didn’t know the number, but the message they left wasn’t very clear. Today, I got a call from 020 810 35990. The person on the line actually knew my name and which bank I use, and they claimed there was suspicious activity on my account. I received two phone calls purporting to be from the Cooperative Bank, both concerning some alleged fraud on my account. They had the audacity to use my full name! The first time, I promptly hung up, but the second time, I decided to put it on loudspeaker so my wife could hear. Each occasion involved the automated system telling me to press any key to continue; I chose to refrain, yet somehow, the second call transitioned into a recorded message-maybe it picked up our voices? This message prompted me to ring an 020 number before the call concluded. Initially, I was skeptical, but there had been some unusual activity on my account that day, which made it seem a tad more believable. I didn't jot down the number, but after dialing 1471, it revealed this number. Upon checking with the Coop, it turns out their contact numbers, even for Fraud, start with 0345, and not the ordinary 020 numbers, which raised my suspicions further. Considering the information available here, I'm certainly steering clear of that number!

I got a call from this number, turned out to be an automated message supposedly from Co-op bank, checking if there’s any fraudulent activity on your account. I received a voicemail from this number claiming to be the Co-op Bank, urging me to call back immediately regarding suspected fraudulent activity. Strangely enough, this coincided with a period when online banking services were down for maintenance. Curious, I called the number while using 141 for privacy, and they again insisted they were from the Co-operative Bank, assuring me it would only take a minute of my time. Naturally, I decided against continuing the conversation and instead contacted Co-op directly using their official number. They confirmed that there was absolutely no fraudulent activity on my account, and they had no record of any outreach from them, nor did they recognise the number I had called. Clearly, this is a scam.

Got several calls from this number all on the same day, 5 Jan 2021. When it went to my voicemail, a recorded female voice said something like: "To keep you safe from fraud, listen to the whole message. If you are (my full name - how do they even know that?), press 1. If not, press 5." Then the message just cuts off. Obviously I didn’t press anything, because I figured it was some sort of scam that would connect me to a costly premium line, maybe even charging me after I hang up. I reported it to the Information Commissioner’s Office as a nuisance call. I also found this info on a website saying that the 020 code is for London and nearby areas, but this particular number doesn’t seem to come from a legit allocated range. They reckon the caller is probably spoofing the number, and Ofcom’s records show that numbers beginning 0208103 should be free to use and unassigned. My advice? Just don’t pick up if this number calls you!
